I've tried both earplugs AND eyeshades for those "got to sleep NOW" layovers. For me, ear plugs are painful, and way too distracting.

The best thing for me is white noise... turn any fans on full. I really need to get one of those white noise sleep machines.

As for kids screwing around in the hallway... I've lost all patience with that crap. I'll stick my scary old-man face out into the hall and tell them to keep it down. And if that doesn't work, calling the front desk usually does.

Only once have I been fed up with that. Hockey team or something running thru the hotel. Opened the door and yelled "hey guys, knock it off, your mom and I are trying to sleep!" I think they were shocked into silence.

On of the greatest joys I receive is when the obnoxious room is directly next to mine and we have an early show. I can't remember exactly where I learned this technique, maybe here on APC. The Mariachi Double Fist as I've Heard it referred begins with finding the most annoying radio station on the clock radio, most likely mariachi music(hence the name). Crank the volume to max, set the alarm for a few minutes past your van time and place it directly next to the wall of the a** clowns. Surround the clock will pillows to reduce collateral damage and call for a wake up at the exact same time as the alarm.

Are there any polka stations left on radio?

Another favorite is if the noisemakers are a sports team or a tour group. Then, right before you board the van to the airport at 0-Dark-30, call the offenders' rooms from the house phone in the lobby, and say "Hey, hurry up and get down here! The bus is leaving in five minutes!"

Then hang up.

Download app called white noise. It's free. I can't sleep without it!

Agreed... there is definitely some toolishness to be bestowed on the crew that was too lazy to preflight correctly/ deice and get ready to takeoff with a contaminated wing, though.

I'd have been fuming as well, just there are more appropriate ways to deal with it.
