I’m fairly certain that the rest of the freight slots are going to be filled with people still in the pool. Could be an unpopular opinion, but I would rather have people apply that actually want to work at Hawaiian (I know, we will be Alaska airlines soon enough, but it’s the last pilot opening as Hawaiian airlines) and be based in HNL. Instead of pilots that are going to complain about commuting and how much it sucks and how they can’t wait to bid to a different base.

Thank you!

Expect and want the 717! It’s a great plane and a special part of Hawaiian airlines history that will soon be gone.

Even If it’s unpopular, I’d second it.

There are a LOT of 717 slots that I wish they’d focus on hiring local for. Plenty of Hawaii resumes coming in this window after almost 2 years of no interviewing.

I would prefer that too, but even if the hiring is done through Hawaiians hiring page, it's Alaska's show now. We have an Alaska Chief pilot and an assistant chief pilot that forgot he was ever Hawaiian as soon as they offered him base chief pilot doing the hiring. I'm fairly certain they're more interested in pilots that want to work for Alaska and are ok being "stuck" on the 717 for the 2-3 years it has left than they are pilots that would love the 717 but will be "stuck" flying 737s for 30 years after it leaves.

Fair assessment on the hiring part. Although I would think they would want to hire guys into a base that would prefer to stay in base for the long term. I would also bet that guys that say they want 717 actually just want to fly interisland and don’t necessarily care what fleet type is flying it. What schedule changes come with the new fleet type is what I’m interested in seeing.

Alaska has a history of hiring people with roots in specific zip codes.

That may have backfired a bit lately, they seem to have hired a lot of folks from Alaska (the state) in the last wave, who are now stuck commuting to CA and not happy about it.

The dust will settle eventually, and I bet they'll run segregated classes for 737, AZ, and HI, and prioritize appropriate zip codes in applicant screening. It only makes sense, if you require folks to show up for class and spin the roulette wheel you're just asking for attrition. You can give them the choice of first available, but I think it's smart to offer some geographic certainty when it's practical.

No need in 2025 to prove how bad you want to work here by commuting across the western hemisphere for an indeterminate period

Curious to know if somebody with a year (or even less) on property could bid and get awarded CA on the 717

No. The most junior pilot currently holding 717 CA was a July 2022 hire.

Is there much opportunity to earn more than the base salary on the 717? With rent and general costs of living in HI, it looks like it may be tricky for the numbers to add up even with the first year $10k bonus.
