Interested in this as well. Seems like for commuters it would be tough to make work on the 717 until upgrade. I think I know the answer though, don't commute, find a roomate(s), get a side hustle.

Yes, because where a pilot grew up should be the #1 factor. Definitely not experience.

commuting sucks, but if you bid reserve and get all your days in a row it’s slightly less suck. Crash pads work for most commuters.

you’re crazy if you think airlines hire based on experience alone. Everybody that interviews has the requisite experience. There’s also a reason why Hawaiian has a pilot panel as part of the interview. Will you fit the airlines culture and can we stand flying with you. Do I want to fly with a commuter that constantly complains about commuting and the cost of living, or do I want to fly with somebody who’s career goal was to be a pilot at Hawaiian airlines and has the family support to make it happen? Also, there was a time not too long ago where guys would come to Hawaiian for an Airbus type and then bounce to one of the big 3. Does Alaska want that kind of turnstile hiring? I doubt it.

Please don’t pick the 717 if you have a chance to fly it for the upgrade, that ship has sailed. There were pilots selecting it in new hire class for the upgrade in late 2022 and even 2023. That didn’t happens for them. The days of 4 month vacancy award or over. Many have bailed for other flying.
That plane is a dying fleet. They have eliminated captain seats. The captains in it will stay until their retirement or plane is parked.

It's going to be a challenging time for those hired into it, in the sense that you'll be hired into a dying fleet with no perspective of progression. I've seen that before.

On the other hand, I wonder how many will read what Neosporin said and will think "it will be different with me".

Appreciate the info! My SSN will almost certainly have me "selecting" last, so planning on the 717.

Walk me thro that one, I actually don't know this. Is a higher SSN better than a lower or the opposite?

Goes by last 4 of SSN. Lower is better.
