it depends on the airline. we don't have zed fares with all airlines in the world. and some of the ones we do have agreements with, believe it or not, do not allow zed fare tickets to be bought for employee's parents. if you have any specific airlines you want us to check, i'm sure someone here (me included) would gladly do that.
and not all of them are low, either. some are medium, some are high. it's just a pricing thing. some airline medium prices are higher than other airline high prices. again, we're just talking zed fares, which are standby tickets.

I'm looking to possibly make the move to B6 from L-XJT, but I'm not looking forward to losing United benefits. Despite the low priority we get, my parents and I do use it quite a bit.

I'll jump in and ask... what's the ZED agreement with United? Are business class listings available?
I'm looking to possibly make the move to B6 from L-XJT, but I'm not looking forward to losing United benefits. Despite the low priority we get, my parents and I do use it quite a bit.

ZED's are calculated purely on a Mileage Zone cost + applicable departure taxes from the airport your leaving. Your agreement between airlines determines whether your airline will get ZED low, med, or high prices + taxes. If two airlines are flying from JFK to LHR as ZED Med, their price should be identical to you.
The OLD system of using ID90's was being seriously gamed by many carriers. I once priced an ID90 on Air New Zealand from HNL to AKL in the 2000's and got a quote of $650 one way! They claimed that a one way ticket, undiscounted was $6500 so 10% of that is what you pay for an ID90. You could at the time buy a ticket on Expedia for about $400 one way with a guaranteed seat.
Cases like that are what drove the industry to move to the ZED system throughout the 2000's.
