Default QOL followup

Sorry if this is off topic, but would greatly appreciate an insider view on the choice of an E190 (BOS or JFK) vs. A220 in BOS. In short, I'm wondering if/when a new hire can drop reserve/trips to the company and build a better schedule. Assuming that's possible, would a specific base or aircraft be the "go to"? Thanks.

JFK190/BOS190/BOS220 is the most junior to least junior, and will provide the quickest ability to move stuff around. If you want QOL/schedule flexibility, I’d go 190. But the trips and plane aren’t great. Maybe do 190 for a little (to the base with the easiest or better yet no commute) and on the august bid re-look 220 or 320.

Thanks for the heads up! Have flown and enjoyed the E175, but I’m guessing the JB E190s are worn out? And curious what makes the northeast flying makes for bad trips? Red eyes? Long duty?
Thanks.

I just don’t like the 190 cockpit. Cramped. Loud. Cheaply made. Trips are bad because of many legs (which means more time on the ground while on the clock and unproductive compared to 1 and done transcons). No redeyes on the 190. It’s usually in bed by 11pm to midnight. But a lot of early mornings, so especially if you’re not an east coast guy, it can be bad in that manner. Once you go bus it’s hard to go back to that thing. But, the seniority is comparatively way better, in both seats. The 220 is too new and too small a group to accurately gauge trips and seniority.

The E175 to A220 transition for you would be as seamless as seamless gets…besides obviously being awarded the 190. Best program by a mile though at Jetblue having done all three. The A220 biggest advantage they have found are flights over 2 hours, so I don’t think you’ll see much of the shuttle type flying the 190 gets. On the reverse there will be redeyes.

A friend of mine who flew the 190 at JB lovingly called it “one giant Bic razor” for the cheap design and plastic used throughout. But it least it has the HUD…..

Pretty much summed it up perfectly here. Hard to go back to that thing even as Captain.

Default QOL and trip drops

I appreciate the thoughtful replies on this forum, which is not usually the case. Yeah, being a west coast guy is a real disadvantage at JB, so I'm wondering if there's a chance that JB pilots have the ability to drop reserve and/or trips. That would really make life a lot easier. I know that some major airlines have the options to drop all the way down to zero, while some (Alaska) can't seem to drop any. Any input on where JB stands on this issue?

You can drop to 70 credit hours and trade to 0. You can use PTO to drop below 70 if you want, as the PTO would count toward the 70 min. Then trade away below it. So on reserve you can UTO (unpaid) one day and PTO below that, assuming you have the PTO (not a good use of PTO…I wouldn’t recommend using much when it’s only worth $91/hr when it’ll be much more than that in a couple years).

Thanks for the info! I would assume that trading down to zero with a junior line is highly unlikely.
