Living 3 hours from BOS, would it be easy to "partially" drive, say within an hour of the airport when on reserve? What are the durations of the reserve days? Thanks

I flew with a guy who lives up in NH, about 2.5 hours from the airport.. He repositions himself to about an hour away at a family members house during short call.

Our short call blocks are 10 hours long. He leave his house about 15 minutes before his block begins and works his way south.. then if not called in, he leaves about 2 hours from his end time for the trek back home

I've got an upcoming interview with JB and I've got a few questions about living around BOS. I'm from Maine and at some point, would like to move back up there, but where I'm looking (Portland area) is a little far to sit reserve from home.

1) How far from BOS can you live and still make the 2hr callout? Would Manchester or Portsmouth, NH be to far when factoring in traffic and however much time it takes to park and make it to the airport?

2) What are some common family friendly areas that are comfortably inside the reserve radius?

Thanks for the insight that any of you may be able to provide.

Manchester and Portsmouth areas are very popular for JB crews and reserve shouldn't be a problem for either spot. I'm sure others will chime in with some suggested towns, but here's a start:

Portsmouth area- Exeter, Hampton Falls, North Hampton, stratham, Greenland

Manchester- Derry, Windham, Londonderry

Don't want to start a fight but some of those towns have school systems that are much better than others on the list. Not a bad list for a reserve guy to start with. Either side of NH listed above also has some other good school systems but with a more rural feel (and a bit of a longer drive off the Interstate). I would also look at property tax rate as they can vary greatly from town to town...though you will get what you pay for most of the time. I believe the city of Portsmouth has a lower tax rate than most with a good school system but the flipside is property is more $$ compared to the surrounding areas. Other concerns might be if a town has full time police and fire, not all of them do...it will affect response time as well as home insurance rates.

True. I live in downtown Portsmouth. The taxes are quite low relative to the surrounding area, even parts of Maine. Property prices are quite high. The schools in some areas are better than others. Portsmouth is good, but Durham seems to be the place everyone raves about the schools.

Property taxes in Durham are ridiculous. Traffic sucks if you live on the west side of the UNH campus too.

True. Traffic will be an issue on reserve. Sundays traffic on 95 is insane southbound and typical rush hour clogs up route 4 at both times of day. This could put you on a short leash for reserve during certain times. The seacoast is just nicer than Manchester in my opinion, though I'm biased.

If you need a good realtor, let me know as I can recommend one to you!

Does anyone that parks at the Chelsea garage have any tips for getting around that bridge? I'm coming from the pike. It seems unreasonable we have to park somewhere that requires us to cross a busy draw bridge!

Couple options.

Meridien ST Bridge. Also a drawbridge but might beat it sometimes.

RT 1A N past Target get off there to 16 and then Eastern Ave. Similar to the Bus route when bridge is up but shorter, no f'ed up rotary.

Get off the pike early and take the central artery/93 N to Tobin and get off in Chelsea. Only do this with NO traffic, off hours.
