I just had a new hire (less than 6 months) FA complain to me during the bathroom break that it is BS that pilots don't have to do airport standby.
I calmly told her that we used to do it all the time (not true) but after we got a Union they told the company we just don't feel like doing that anymore and would rather sit at home or in the crashpad and play flight simulator to keep our skills up.
I'm about 90 percent sure she believed me.

Give up the socialist we-are-all-alike garbage. It's astounding your utter unwillingness to acknowledge a potential maturity difference between a 19-year-old GO recruit and someone who has met the qualifications to be hired as a major airline pilot. No other work group (possibly excepting Tech Ops) spends as much time in training at a stretch as we do, and you'll note I said "certificated employees". That includes Tech Ops, who imho have a similar investment into this career and thus the expected maturity.
GMAFB Southerner. My aviation background includes stints on the line, ramp, agent (res and airport), and flight attendant before I started working professionally as a pilot. I give the utmost respect to each person I work with as their due as a fellow human being, and have more perspective than most about the challenges they deal with.
But darn right when I was throwing bags or serving coffee I knew the pilots had "earned" different privileges and preogatives by dint of what they had invested in their career, and I'm not the least bit ashamed to still believe that today.

No disrespect to your wife/girlfriend/boyfriend/whoever, but how many years of experience did this theoretical FA have to accrue to be qualified to work here? (Hint, it's zero). Other than the BlewJet where we have hired a few more than average, exactly how many major airline pilots do you know with only a diploma? 🙄

We are all dumber for reading it.
What about all those waitresses with degrees?? But but but?
You've once again entirely missed the point.

Southerner based on your past at ExpressJet/ASA I'm guessing you're a ladder climber already involved in management. So you will side with management decisions. But an effective leader doesn't just blindly follow his supervisors decisions. You must be able to look at bs and call it bs. You don't seem capable of that.

You are in a position that should demand respect because of what is required of the position. Yes, you are in a more respect position because what the job entails. No, you are not equal to a flight attendant.
A CEO of a company can still be a "swell guy" but make no mistake there is a differentiation between that position and one who works beneath he/she. The simple fact the final authority for the safe operation of the aircraft lies solely on the crew demands respect and delineates the chain of command.
Jetblue, over the years, has chosen to blur this line which has led to significant issues throughout the operation. Don't believe me, call one of the pilots who have been involved over the years. Call any of the safety guys and ask them. This is a significant issue at jetblue.

Simple yes or no, do you believe surgeons should clean the OR after they finish with a patient? Should our management sweep and vacuum the board room after a meeting? Yes or no?

Why do we have this policy? Why else would we? Team building? How is that going? Free labor.
