That was also the reason for my response. Kalitta is no longer an “outfit” where pilots can find temporary refuge until their “real” job opens up again. I find it incredibly insulting that someone would think it was 2006 again. Unless the aforementioned pilot was a check airman instructor I cannot see where they would bring a skill set sufficient to offset the training costs for a short term stay.

Maybe he is willing to resign at UAL with a class date at Kalita before he is furloughed?

...or because most, if not all ALPA carriers have a clause in their contract that “the company shall make reasonable efforts to fill vacancies who satisfy the hiring standards, who have previously worked for carriers represented by ALPA, and who are no longer working for those carriers for economic reasons such as lay-offs or the shutdown of that carrier”

Sorry that me wanting to find a source of income during a downturn and possible unemployment hurts your feelings. Just putting feelers out there, that’s all. Guess I’ll just go broke and default on my mortgage because you’re so insulted that I think Kalitta is the best of the ACMI carriers and I’d actually want to work there.

^^^^^^^I don't think any of that and I really enjoyed most of the guys that were with us in the past that were furghloughed from other places. I've been out of work twice in my career, once from what I thought was my forever job. While for yours and many others sake I hope everyone is wrong I think that people are correct about hiring this time though. Unless your airline actually shuts down I think there is a less likely chance that Kalitta (or other ACMI) will hire you over someone they think might stay longer. I recently switched from captain on the 747 to the 777. The cost to K4 because we don't own our own 777 SIM was north of $60,000 all in with Boeing SIM, flights to/from Singapore, hotels etc. That's a lot of cost to amoritize over a short period of time. The possible exceptions to this might be guys who were here before and left on good terms. There are several I can name off the top of my head and doubtless more.

We were also getting many applications from guys leaving China and the Middle East, some may choose to stay put now that the world has changed but a lot have been told goodbye you won't be called back. Many have 747, 777 or 787 type ratings.

I feel for everyone in the industry right now. I have friends or family at every major passenger airline, LCC, ULCC and freight hauler. I'm afraid this is going to make the downturn from the first Gulf War, 911 and the lost decade look like a cake walk. If it last long enough even the freight airlines are going to feel the pinch we are so far avoiding. I hope everyone that might get furloughed finds a job to carry them through. The best advise I have is to network. Call that guy you haven't thought of in 15 years. What's the worst he can say? If your previous airline is still around give them a call. Again, what's the worst that they can say? You're no worse off than you were before reaching out. Most people are genuinely happy to try to help. Even if they can't they might have a lead that would. Good luck. Let's all hope and pray that we can look back at this thread in the fall and be happy none of it ever came to pass.

Yeah...ALPA cares about that. While working at Air Wisconsin...UAL bought us for our 100 slots at ORD. UAL contract had a provision to add us to their list....ALPA wound not even discuss it. We were eventually broken up and splintered into 3 smaller carriers. Of course UAL kept the slots and most were furlough. Now if you actually want to work there and are willing to resign for the next available class I might be a believer. And you will not go broke and can pay your mortgage.

Look, I don’t disagree with any of the points you made up above. I could see if I came on here posting that UAL is about to furlough me and that I demand to be put in the first class, that would be one thing. But I didn’t. All I was asking for is any word on the hiring news there. You guys are hiring pilots, I might need a job. It’s a simple equation. The least I can do is apply. If the hiring department doesn’t see “value” in whatever I, or someone like me has to offer, that’s fine. But I’m pretty sure that’s not for you to decide, that much we can probably both agree on. I’d be grateful for whatever job I can get, as would the thousands of other pilots that could potentially also find themselves on the street. But, if you were in my shoes, would you not want to start with the best options out there? Would you not want to try to have the best possible outcome to the worst possible scenario? I mean no insult in my intentions- I love my current job, but hauling boxes around the world in an awesome airplane was some of the most fun flying I’ve ever done.

My 2 cents...

Feelings are flying high these days. It’s just how it is. By all means apply and see what happens. The somewhat strong response you’re getting probably has root in the fact that
many of the good people in the ACMI world have fallen prey to the perceived HR and politics purgatory the legacies have been running these past 5 years.

These folks found themselves sitting amongst other highly experienced and battle worn aviators at $1000 WIA, OBAP, and NGPA conventions looking to finally have a permanent home. What they were met with was some gender ambiguous yes man/woman doing a presentation on the new and prospective ab-initio program said legacy was planning to implement. Let that sink in for a moment. “We know you have groomed yourself for this opportunity your whole career but here is our plan to hire directly from universities and not give you the chance to even interview”

They finally found a home at K4. A place where they are valued and respected employees. When you come on here looking for a plan B and seeing their home as such you’re going to get a strong response. K4 is a career destination for these folks and they are very loyal to their company. Pilots are heavily involved in the hiring process and this place is old school in several ways.

Does anyone here know how stringent K4 will be about hiring non-777-typed pilots in the coming months? I’m a former TSH-carrier guy out of work, and looking to hang my hat here. Quals are 5k TT, 1.9k 121 TPIC, LCA, 4-year degree, 2 types in RJ’s only, and 2 potential internal recs (haven’t gotten recs from them just yet). Planning on applying to see what happens, but realistically, what are my chances at getting the interview?
