this thread is a trip. so much anger. i felt it needed a lighter note. take it easy ya'll, take it easy.
BTW tonyC, just for ******s and giggles.... buy some vandoren 3 1/2's for your son. he'll want to use those when his chops improve the softer 3 1/2's allows for more dynamic control and expression. im sure he would use those for his soprano or alto anyway. better to keep it the same.
happy day,

I got the #4. $13 a piece!
He said he asked for a #3½, but he needs to be working up to a #4 anyway, he was just being lazy. If they hadn't outlawed cell phones in school, I could've just text-messaged him.
Anyway, he's happy with the #4, and I'm happy he's happy. Now I gotta go get some work out of his hide -- a little landscaping project this afternoon.
(He hasn't touched the Alto in over 2 years -- probably won't until he gets to college. UT doesn't march a bari, so he'll make the sacrifice to wear the Orange.)

And in this corner, we have the Mighty Dr. Montana and his loyal sidekick SkyHigh. The good doctor is going to try a stunning comeback in this next round. Let's see what we have in the other corner. Why, it's TonyC himself, amply supported by de727ups and a cast of thousands. Caught in the middle of this carnage is the poor 18 year old kid whose dream of flying that United 777 is now dashed, but still clinging to that shred of hope. Perhaps his inate passion for flying will pull him out of this funk. And not to mention the possibility of making six figures if only he would stick it out for 30 years.
So, duke it up, gentlemen! What would life be on an anonymous pilot board without this form of entertainment?

I hope the aspiring "kid" makes it to trip 7 left seat-and that it's worth being there. I'm here for the ones who need solid advice and a real alternative.
Hate all you want-I'm laughing all the way to the bank.

But you don't offer solid advice. You offer flawed advice. Your advice is that the industry is not worth the effort of trying. Your advice is the reward is not worth the effort. Your advice is flat wrong.
And that's all -- it's an alternative, and the fact that you chose it does not mean it's necessarily superior. Truck driving is also a real alternative.
All those bank deposits don't satisfy your self image, or you wouldn't be here preaching.

If the advice I give here threatens you-feel free not to take it.
You never answered my question, so i'll ask again-what airline do you fly for?

The advice doesn't threaten me, but it could potentially steer a young pilot in the wrong direction. If it didn't have the potential to misinform, I wouldn't care a whit what you say. But when you assume an air of authority and dole out bad information, I'm inclined to point out the fallacies you spew.
For example, a young aspiring pilot is about to lose his job in the industry and is desperate to stay afloat. What should he do? Your advice is to abandon aviation because it is an unworthy profession, and success is unachievable.
My advice, if he's seriously interested in a career in aviation, is to get a job -- any job -- that will pay the bills until the next upswing. Aviation is cyclical. It goes up, it goes down, it goes up, it goes down. Guess what? It will go up again. And when it does, this young aviator needs to be in a postion to catch it on the upswing. Build fences. Paint houses. Deliver pizza. Drive a truck. That doesn't mean he has to be a truck driver for the rest of his life. It means he can put food on the table and be poised to catch the next wave.
He can give up and have ZERO percent of success, and that's exactly what you'd advise. Or he can bust his tail like every single one of us has, and he can make it.
I ignored it, because it's irrelevant.
If it means so much to you, do a little research, Doc.

DON'T YOU REALIZE THIS ISN'T "NORMAL"? What other "profession" is supposed to go through cyclical times? This is the bull**** we've accepted as pilots! do you see md's and lawyers driving a truck, waiting tables, building houses? NO! If you wan't to call this a profession, you shouldn't see threads about "what do you guys do for second jobs?" I know someone very close to me
who left law practice for a while, and decided to go back after a three year hiatus (sp). All she had to do was take her "CLE" which is the attorney version of a recurrent. When she did, she was wooed by a few firms, and all three of them FLEW HER DOWN ON THEIR DIME (yes, NJA does this....but only them.) took her out to lunch, and kissed her a$$! They then paid her to sit at home and study for the Florida bar. When she was ready, they paid for her Bar exam. When she selected the firm she wanted to work at, they hired her as an "of counsel" (somewhere between an associate and a partner). They also told her exactly when she'd be up for partnership, and it happened. She did NOT have to start at the bottom. She did NOT take a crappy salary. Do you guys think it's OK that ups has all of those apps? what about SWA? NJA? How long do you fall over yourselves (I'm guilty of it too) to get these jobs? rant over.

What I do not understand is why those who love this industry are here. It's called "Leaving the industry"! Why are you even in here in the first place if you don't want out?
Jesus, it's almost like this forum has become the antithesis of its name. The "Pilot Profession Defense Force" is out in full effect here. How dare one decide to do something else with their life. Let us who want out actually talk about it for crying out loud!

This is what I don't get about this forum. IT IS SPECIFICALLY a forum for those wishing to leave the industry. Some of us asked for it, and got it. There are those, like me, who want out of this profession. I appreciate hearing the experiences of those who have left! Is that not one of the purposes of this forum? So, I for one am glad you post, and others who have left. Thank you.
