It's true. Cops, soldiers, firefighters don't get paid for what they do but for what they might have to do. An important distinction.

Give'em what they deserve. Fine by me. Cost of doing business in an advanced society.

I do believe though what USMC said earlier is correct. Most of these other career fields don't have the "starry eyed kids" begging for the job before they realize what damage they do to the profession and eventually to themselves. Our own worst enemies.

Working for the City of Seattle is for chumps! The real money is dressing up as a King County Sheriff. There is also the added benefit of being able to work out your anger management issues and unexplained aggression towards citizens by cracking their heads into concrete walls and other such violent behavior. I also heard the minimum requirements are really low. Apparently, any dumbass can pass the, uh, tests.

There are many more police and firefighters in the US than pilots. Of course they will have more deaths than pilots. I have been a volunteer firefighter and small city full time firefighter and to this day do not have a friend or acquaintance that got so much as a scratch on the job.

As a pilot however I lost plenty of friends.

Oh, look once again sky doesn't do his home work, Seattle has huge budget problems and is slashing jobs and services.

From last Jan, there are dozens more reports from as recent as 5 days ago.

Dude we get it, you couldn't make it in aviation.... Everything pays better... Yet you continue to hang out on aviation boards.

Lucky you, well kinda due in part to you being with small departments. This has been a rough year for my father on Chicago's fire department, just last month two of his friends got burned up real bad; neither will return to work it seems. I remember so many times getting the call that my dad was hurt on the job it's amazing how many times he should have been killed. The pay coincides with how dangerous the job is, and flying just isn't as dangerous as going into a burning building.

Chicago must be tuff. Where I live most buildings are new. Real fires where a firefighter has to make entry into a building are rare. Most of the time it is old ladies who are having difficulty breathing and the occasional car crash. Yet they still make a fortune.

Whenever one does perish in the line of duty the entire state take pause. However when a pilot goes in flying medical samples know one notices. I would rather be the firefighter.

Good for them....can't pay our public service protectors police/fire/ems/military enough.

Not many jobs I can think of that carries daily risk of death, HIV needle prick, fall/accident, fight, disfigurement, burns, vehicle accident etc etc. Oh yeah, do it again tomorrow, and tomorrow. Try to make it 20, 25 years. I might say that a large majority of the public hates you and hates what your represent. You have probably told your kids to not discuss what dad "does for a living" at school.

A remote car stop on a van of thugs, by highway patrolman at 2AM ? its the trooper and his microphone to dispatch.

No ATC, TCAS, TAWS, FADEC, NEXRAD, ADS-B, ACARS, etc to keep him "out of trouble"

"Succeeded"? Really? That is the entire debate. Where is the benefit if you have to leave behind most of everything else that you value to get where you want in aviation? I am more interested in how to succeed in life. Increasingly aviation seems to be an obstacle to achieving that goal then a supporting element.

Where you might see success I see a potential detour into a self destructive lifestyle.
