Thanks for the insight. I was hoping I wouldn't have to take out my dusty copy of Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators.

Default Few questions for Inspector position

I have always thought about working for the FAA in addition to flying I have many years as an investigator so hopefully it goes hand in hand.

What are the average times for TT and dual given, the more the better to qualify ?

Is an MEI required for GA side ? Anyone hired with just a commercial ticket ?
I am working on my ATP now so may wait to apply.

What happens if offered a position at a place you don't want to live ? Can you wait till a position opens elsewhere ?

How long is training ?

Thanks

I'm currently a regional pilot with XJT and I've put my application in for both General Aviation Operations and Air Carrier Operations inspector postitons. I notice that they keep pushing back the closing date of the job position on USAjobs.gov. Do they call candidates while the window is still open or will they call only after the posting has closed?

Additionally, I have 4000 hours total time with an ATP, with current CFI/CFII/MEI certs and 1500 hours dual given with a bachelors from ERAU and I'm about half way done with a masters in aero sci with dual specializations in operations and safety. Does my background fit the profile of someone that the FAA would be interested in, or do I need more experience to be considered highly-qualified?

Thanks in advance!

Your qualifications sounds like a fine fit.
My organization just hired a pilot out of the FSDO with your qualifications.

Bumper - not sure on each of your questions. There are a few ASIs on the forum here that you might want to contact via PM. JamesNoBrakes and Perfnit are two that are active.
You should also look at any USAJOBS.gov announcement and all of the requirements will be laid out. I am pretty sure that CFI/II/MEI are required - especially for the GA side. I'm going to say NO to a wet commercial. There are usually numerous offices available at any time. If you don't like the selection at the time I think your app will hold for 6 months and they might call back. The OPM rules can probably be research at the OPM Human Resources website.

A friend of mine works as a GA ASI in Peachtree city - he loves the job. Get to fly on occasion, and works in a steady job, albeit sometimes mind numbing with repetition - sounds like flying the line. At any rate, he stated that once you get hired and in the system, it is rather easy to move around and promote. Was also told that like the airlines, the FAA has a lot of senior folks that will be retiring in the next few years, so additional opportunities may be present there.

As far as I have found - all of that is true.
The guy sitting across from me is a recent hire to Flight Check that came out of the ATL FSDO. They probably know each other.

I enjoyed working at the FSDO. Boring, no not always. Any job can be boring, I think a lot is what you put into it.
However, I enjoy where I am now.

These are all J band jobs, not entry level. Most entry levels are starting at either a 9 or 11. One year probation.
