I'm assuming that they fall under the same hiring freeze that everyone else fell under when it hit 1 March. There was a flurry of activity right before the end of February to at least get names on the books.

They do, as ASI's are going to be furloughed one day, every two weeks. Perhaps James can pipe in. I'm surprised that the posting wasn't cancelled, as were several others.

I came across this forum and I am not even sure if this is an appropriate place to post this question but…
I have applied for Aviation Safety Inspector Air Carrier Maintenance back in November 2012 since then the posting has closed and not been re-opened, most likely due to the sequestration, furloughs ect… I did get in contact with the manager of the CMO I want to work at and he basically told me to keep in contact but they were on a hiring freeze at the time being.
There has not been a referral put out. I just wonder if I am getting my hopes up thinking that I may have a chance when the hiring freeze ends. I know the FAA gets their new year budget Sep 30 2013.
I just hear and see that most ASI seem to be older with 20+ years’ experience. I am still in my 20’s but I do have a bachelors’ in aviation science and 8 years’ experience as an A&P.
Can anyone give me any info on what their hiring experience has been like with the FAA?
Thanks

Question for you guys: if you get hired in a certain location (I live in OKC), is it easy to stay in that location, or are you expected to move as you promote or progress in your career?

You don't really get shipped around like in the military. You bid on jobs if you want to move. It's relatively easy to stay where you get hired. You can advance decently in that place by becoming a POI, but the other places you could eventually work up to would be your Regional HQ or Washington. If you want to move away from the FSDO/CMO that you get hired in, you have to spend at least 1yr. Due to the amount of effort it takes to train and providing a value for the office, I'd recommend more than that, but that is personal. Most of the time the office would "like" you to stay where you are hired.

I was planning on applying when the FAA starts hiring asi's again. I'd like to get a head start on writing the KSA's. If anyone has the questions from the old application they were using and wouldn't mind sending them to me I'd appreciate it. Also any new advice on applying would be welcome.

Thanks

121, I don't believe I'd be eligible for GA since my CFI expired

Well, if you wanna get your foot in the door quicker try and get your CFI renewed. it will help your chances 100%. This is because there are by far many more GA offices than Air Carrier.

Here are the KSAs for the 121 posting...

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA)

1. Risk Management - The ability to assure that risk is identified, evaluated, documented, eliminated or controlled within defined program risk parameters.

2. Evaluation - The ability to determine if a process or component is doing what it was designed to do and is producing the intended results.

3. Workload Management - Ability to organize and complete work activities effectively, efficiently, and in accordance with established priorities.

4. Decision Making - Makes sound, well-informed, and objective decisions based on critical thinking principles and sound facts and data; perceives the impact and implications of decisions; makes recommendations and commits to action, even in uncertain situations, to accomplish organizational goals.

5. Communications - The ability to communicate in English in a clear, concise manner that is appropriate for the target audience.

6. Teamwork - The ability to work well with other team members; monitor progress; to ensure goals are achieved.

7. Interpersonal Skills - The ability to relate to individuals; consider differing views; consider and respond appropriately to needs, feelings, capabilities; provide constructive and positive feedback; and manage conflict.

8. Information Management - Identifies a need for and knows where or how to gather information; organizes and maintains information using information management systems.
