Maybe it's a little "to soon". I didn't know the guy but I'm sure he was a good dude. I probably could work on my understanding a little better yet matters that involve kids are very sensitive to me. The idea of two parents shooting up in the bedroom with kids outside is just to unbelievable to comprehend.

May they rest in peace.
Well, my friend. It's not easy. There are doctors that devote their career to understanding addiction, so I'm definitely not going to be able to help you understand. Just pray it never hits you close to home.

Enjoy your life of zero temptations as you live in your bubble
Self righteous.......whatever. Gonna go out on a limb and guess you don't have kids. Listen, I get the addiction thing but one still has to take that first step (whether it be "way out of character"). We all make decisions. If you were good friends, sorry for your loss. It probably is to soon to discuss the dark side of this. But since we are being sympathetic to people with "demons" or "addictions" I am curious how you would react to a person with alcohol problems if they decided to get behind the wheel loaded and took out your family?

Zero temptations? Hardly. Right now I'm fighting the temptation to start drinking green beer early! Anyway, I'm done. Again, sorry for your loss.

"It probably is to soon to discuss the dark side of this." We don't even know what happened. It saddens me to see how many of my peers are so judgemental and holier than thou. Any time that something happens the judgemental internet vultures jump all over it assuming they know what happened from the first batch of newspaper articles. It is a sad character trait that seems to run deep in the pilot profession. Give the guy, his friends, and his family a break and don't crucify him online until you know all facts. Get some class.

It's called diffusion of responsibility. Nobody would speak Ill of the dead out loud in a group of peers in real life. The internet provides a cloak for those that wish to hide and throw rotten apples without repercussion. It's easy to fall into this trap but this is a good example of a time when we should just remove our hat, be respectful and keep opinions to ourself

This is a tragedy. It can be filed under never should have happened. Untreated addiction ends 1 of 3 ways. Jails, institutions and death. For those that knew Brian, this should be a memorial to him. Not a forum for holier than thou ignorant d-bags to crap on a horrific situation.

At a conference recently, its estimated approx 15% of the population is addicted to synthetic opiods. Random testing will begin soon for the synthetics. If you think it can't happen to you, or someone you know.... check out Dr Kevin McCauley former marine corps flt surgeon. Gives a very powerful presentation and what happened to him.

Last month I had reconstructive foot surgery and am still out on medical recovering. Know what my biggest fear was? Not the pain I would soon face, the immobility, or even the small possibility of death like we just saw with Bill Paxton.

My biggest fear was becoming addicted to the pain medication that I knew I was going to be prescribed. I was in constant pain for a week straight yet terrified of these pills. I took them, (I had to,) but even at the height of my pain I did not always take the max allowed amount. That's how scared I was.

And that's how many an addiction gets started.

So referencing the above quote, While I do believe that "Just say no" is a good start, there's more to it that that.

This didn't have to happen. Neither does the next one.
You have questions?
Worried about someone that is struggling?

As a parent it is very hard for me to understand taking that first step into the abyss, and this is with multiple friends and family members working this epidemic first hand. (Rehab nurses, ER docs, Para/EMTs).

God Bless and prayers to the family and especially those poor kids.

I met one of Brian's kids on one of my first trips after OE. Nice young man, I hope Brian was up to speed on his insurance and the company / ALPA does right by them regardless of the circumstances.
