Well this thread was interesting....

I guess i'll bring up the rear here and get myself all depressed:

1) Airline employer - Spirit
2) Seat - CA - live in base
3) Equipment - 320
4) Years of Service with company 4 - (4th year pay - 3 months as FO, 9 as CA)
5) How many days you worked - 166 + 19 days on reserve but not called out to fly - 180 days off - sit reserve from home so count those 19 days how you will.
6) How many overnights you had - probably 120
7) How many hours you blocked - 630
8) How many hours did you credit - 1015
9) Gross income - $128k
10) Extra Pay (DC, PS, etc.) - $10k company match, all the high fives and smiles I want, and $6,900 perdiem, no socks, no jacket, did not pass go - reached Gold AAdvantage status - lots of middle seats and uncompensated time waiting for my bag in baggage claim.

Total compensation, $145k

I don't answer calls for junior assignment and usually drop trips/reserve days to get more time away from work.

So basically I do extra work to get paid as an FO. Hmm time to update some apps.

1) Airline employer - SWA
2) Seat - FO commuter
3) Equipment - 737
4) Years of Service with company 10
5) How many days you worked - 160
6) How many overnights you had - 120 not counting commuter induced, probably another 15
7) How many hours you blocked - 780
8) How many hours did you credit - 1408
9) Gross income - $224k
10) Extra Pay (DC, PS, etc.) -
$6300 per diem
$28800 into retirement
Profit sharing TBD but probably $25k. Should get about 20k as cash after filling up my retirement to government max.

Total compensation, $285k

Hard to pick up as a commuter but did about 5 premium 3 days and had a couple JA events. Sure seems like I have to block more to make similar to my Big 3 peers. Plus pay for my own parking. No medical premiums.

I think it’s good info for people trying to make big career decisions.

2 to 1 credit vs block seems pretty good to me.

Likely reserve and not getting used much, then picking up extra trips on days off (potentially for draft pay). Gross pay would include vacation at 6 hours a day, plus any sick time, international overrides. Maybe bidding check airman and getting bumped for training also.

Also for 777 first officers, many fly RFO trips, where much of their pay is from deadheading. Deadhead to Asia or Europe, fly a leg or two, deadhead back. Deadhead time is not included in total block time. At FedEx, you are often paid for time away more often than you are for block time.

I saw a poster earlier say that all the guys/gals at the majors make about the same. This is absolutly false. The numbers and benefits don't lie. FedEx leads the pack by a long shot from my observation for the reasons below.

2nd year pay- $173 currently in November it goes to $178. This does not even account for all the trip over rides for international and trip/duty regs.

6 hour a day min gurantee

These guys fly about 250 hours a year and get paid 1100-1300 hours of credit. Thats a 4 to 1 ratio.

A Fund- Pension (130k a year when you retiree funded outside of the company) This is worth about 34k a year assuming a comparable DC contribution ratio and this is assuming a 6% market gain per year

B Fund - 8% DC contributions goes to 9% next year

Almost all of your career is on wide body pay scale which is worth millions over a 30 year career assuming wages and retirement as compared to another doing mostly narrow body.

Upgrades are under 2 years for a 757 Capt.

Yes you see some guys (the abnormal) stating they make 250k as an FO at SWA but this is by far not the normal. These are the supper senior or those flying their life away literally.

I am one of those at SW thats leavening to FedEx and have tones of buddies who have done the same.

The numbers just don't lie folks. If you see someone posting with some obscured numbers you know they are working like a you know what or they are very senior and are bidding to fly with check airman getting dropped and still flying.

Sure FedEx guys make a ton but you have to fly at night. I would prefer not to.

Cue the FedEx guys: "lots of day flying"

Sure, here you go. Because there is plenty of day flying. I flew about 20 nights last year, (too many), but chose to do so because there were 3 day layovers imbedded in the trip or ended up at my home with a back end deadhead.

But for me, those were choices. Not so much if one is junior, unless they want to stay on the computer for trip trading.

I think we look at FEDEX as its own category. But you are right...SWA FOs making 250k a year are the outliers...which is fine, but I would much rather make the same amount of money with half the effort like you could do as a 10 year WB FO at a legacy. Jut waiting on a class.
To each his own, not sure why us LUV guys have such a chip about it.
