As others have tried to point out, 5 years is a long time to be under stress. Kids in college, house payments, vaporized pension, sure...those folks can just quit if they're not happy. Yeah, right.

Walk a mile in his shoes.[/QUOTE]

I still haven't heard anything that changes my opinion, or even gives me pause for consideration. I think there is a noble effort to defend the indefinsible.

If you consider this quote, isn't this one pilots actions actually hurting the recovery for everone at NWA? My recollection is that NWA has recently made hard fought progress in the customer satisfaction/DOT results, which should start reflecting in the financials, contract recovery etc. In consideration of the pilots/employess in stress positions as referenced above, I would feel it negligent if the company didn't react in the best interst of the collective well being. And as far as Managment deriving pleasure from this, does anyone really think that way ? Thats a little embarassing.

In that I don't have more than a casual interst in this, I must say I feel a little foolish giving it this much coverage, so, I will be bowing out of this conversation. Look forward to your replies, and good luck Northwest.

Bottom line, I'm surprised it hasn't happened more often. In regards to the MEC, they have told the company that we are being run at the red line and something has to give. The MEC had better support this pilot who snapped 100%. I personnaly would award him a medal!
Maybe you guys should get a Union to protect you from all that management abuse?
Oh no, stop - you already have a Union?

Backpacks aren't professional because they don't project a professional image... neither do iPods, tattoos, piercings. Just as CEOs don't wear LL Bean backpacks, either should airline pilots. It's important to fit the mold of this professional industry.

The profession is dead for the moment. We are technicians. When we get some authority and compensation back we can talk profession.

Based on what I read about the incident if I was a passenger I would have collared a gate agent or got off the flight altogether. Regardless of what the FARs say, I want an emotionally stable flight crew.
LMFAO!! If you ever find one, let us know!

Actually, many CEO's / owners dress very casually; both on the job and outside of it. The aircraft that I fly belongs to the owner and founder of a large company and he carries his belongings in a back-pack, and carries his skateboard wherever he goes. He gets funny looks in the executive terminals with everyone else in three piece suits. I think its great. I have come across many high profile people like this. I am not saying that pilots should dress this way, just making a comment about your statement. As far as back-packs go though, as long as it isn't flourscent and / or five different colors, I really don't see much of a problem with it. Its just a flight bag with an extra shoulder strap.

When pilots started carrying bags with wheels, many pilots complained that only flight attendants carried bags on wheels. Bags with wheels didn't look professional. Thankfully, though, common sense and practicality prevailed over the egos that wanted to maintain an image from the past.

As more airlines go to an EFB and begin to issue their pilots laptops to carry instead of 25 lbs of Jepps, the back pack will become even more common place. I replaced my Jepp bag this past year with a back pack and I never looked back (except to see why my bags were so light).
