POTUS has first amendment rights like anyone else. He exercises them quite liberally. The press also exercises their first amendment rights quite liberally in regards to POTUS. There's no constitutional protection for the press other than 1st. Amnd.

My premise is the sooner people get back to work the better. Somebody may have to make some hard choices on that eventually.

As to who is at fault, if anyone, we'll have to wait for the historians to decide, we already know what the emotional partisans on both sides think, and neither of their opinions is valid until proven so.

A vaccine will kill this in a few weeks, once fully deployed. So it's not going to last for years.

Also, as a moderator, please lay off the partisan comments (I'm trying to stick to policy, not politics in this).

And you'd be wrong. The death toll will start skyrocketing in the next few days, and getting back to normal will only pour gasoline on the fire.

Again how much death is acceptable to you? 100,000? 500,000? A million?

This is EXACTLY the point. If you can’t put a value on YOUR life, then you have no place - intellectually, morally, or otherwise - placing a dollar value on the head of any fellow human being.

I did put a value on it. $200k.

Yet at the end of the day we will as a society do exactly that.

You place monetary value on human life everyday wether you like it or not. Speed limits, stop signs, smoking laws, buying shoes made in a sweatshop, polluting...... the list goes on.

Genuine question.....Have you got life insurance? If you do Im guessing you have asked for a monetary payout if you die..... Im thinking you dint ask for well wishes from the insurance comapny.

Its just in your face now and its a discussion that must be had and more than likely will be had.

Your position appears to be one of squashing the discussion. Rather than saying 'oh.....lets see....good point there must be a line'....you have said 'no, you cannot discuss.....'

A President doesn’t have the same rights as a private citizen when he is speaking as president. He sets policy, so no, he doesn’t have those same rights. He gave them up when he chose to serve, just like military people do when they swear an oath to defend and protect. That oath takes precedence over his personal desires.

We agree on duration and on hope for quick resolution. I don’t need to wait for history to write what it plainly visible.

But Rick, are you seriously going to silence me because my perceived partisan views conflict with yours? I have not advocated for anyone, and I DO have free speech rights. I’m entitled to criticize and ask questions. I commend you for doing that in public though, as opposed to PM. I respect our dialogue, and if I never see another pro-orange draft dodging buffoon post, I will never post one. Until then, you can’t just let many of us on here just sit and take this nonsense day after day.

Deal?

Not at all.

First off, you’re too cheap! I’m sorry that is such a low value. I’m sure your loved ones would turn down that sum in exchange for your life, at least I hope that is the case.

The dollar amounts of which you speak all relate to deaths once they occur...no one says “we will pay “X” IN ADVANCE in order to kill/maim people.

Your examples are inapposite. When there is a lawsuit payout it is after the fact, and experts argue in court over the right amount. An insurance payout is just a contract between me and an insurer - it has no relation to my worth, just to how much of a premium I want to pay. I can buy $1000 of insurance or $100,000,000–if I am willing to pay the premium!

Far from trying to squelch discussion, I’m trying to set common terminology to cut through the partisan BS on here.

Thank you for setting your $ number. So would you give up your right to emergency medical care to save your life IF your heirs would receive $200,000?

The science goal is to flatten the curve, but that assumes 100% of people might need emergency care. Maybe enough people like you (and LT Gov Patrick of TX and others on this board) feel strongly that lives should be sacrificed to expedite the recovery, why not do it?

Just as there is a way to isolate those of us wanting to flatten the curve, there must be a way to isolate those willing to die for the economy, and they should be recompensed for this. If this is REALLY just an economic discussion, perhaps there is a new volunteer corps to be started here that will be much more impactful than “Space Force”.

Then those of us willing to flatten the curve and those wanting to get back to work now are both satisfied. N

I think true economic discussions are always worth having, but we don’t take an instrumentalist/purely cost-benefit view in this country (look at death penalty, guns, drugs, etc...it’s always moral or punitive). Always happy to have that discussion!

Wow. Do you have anything positive to say about anything or anyone?

I’m sorry someone hurt you.

200,000 or 2,000,000

how is this even a debate?

you’re talking about saving 1.8 million lives by just sitting at home ordering domino’s. The whole world is in the same situation. economics are relative. If our Debt doubles to keep people fed so be it, it’ll be the same everywhere else
