Isn’t the $20.5k Roth your own contributions, ie already included in the $244k pay? Or is that some sort of cash over cap?

you are probably right, it’s not a cash over cap….I usually hit the personal contribution cap of 20.5k in Oct then that after tax deduction just stays in my paycheck…nice little pay bump at the end of the year. I haven’t quite made enough to hit the combined max with the company’s 16% DC yet…also I’m a NB FO

WN 7th yr pay
first 3 months on ExTO so I didnt get any of that sweet 1.5 or double pay.
Total earnings 195k.
of that per diem 4k and a fun fact of 586.39 for red eye override.
NEC of 29k for a grand total of 224k.
517 hrs block.
Try to only work 12 days a month. Live in base

12 Year SCA CPT

335.1k Wages
40.5k Company 401k Contribution
9.3k Per Diem
384.9k Total
590 block hours 1253 hours paid
1 month reserve 1 month sick leave otherwise would have been easily over 400k total compensation.

Look into “automatic in-plan conversion”. You can easily hit the combined max. The personal max is a fake limit.

This^^ everyone that has a plan that allows after tax contributions has the ability to max out the combined limit each year.

but if it’s after tax isn’t it just the same as investing your own post-tax money in whatever you want? What’s the benefit of putting after tax money into a 401k?

There’s a couple advantages. First, it immediately rolls into the 401K, and is essentially identical to Roth contributions, with the same benefits. 2nd, you can race the company to the annual contribution limit, minimizing the pre-tax dollars they manage to put in before you hit the limit. That makes almost the entire retirement account a Roth if one so chooses, and obviously the value can be pretty high if this strategy is started early.

This only works for companies that offer “automatic in-plan conversion” and cash over cap.
