LOL. Love how guys who have zero clue are like "that doesn't take into account pension and free medical" like that somehow totally zeroes the military equation out. I am not a "thank me for my service" kind of guy, but if you haven't endured the military of the last 25 years, you probably shouldn't comment.

That dude's post is gold, and I a glad he posted it here. A first year regional pilot is making way more than someone with years of experience flying an airplane off the front of a carrier into the dark of night with no divert options. Let that sink in. It's a good time to be in this industry.

I'll tell you what needs to sink in. Sitting short call in the dark of night with no departures left!

Posting this as a joke but damn... the grass is looking pretty green right now.

The grass is not greener. You are flying a fighter jet in the Navy. Pretty darn cool. I wouldnt trade 1 day of my military service for 1 day at the airlines and I was a loser helicopter pilot for a big chunk of it. This airline flying is by far the most boring flying you will ever do.....how guys do 40 years of LGA-DFW without going crazy is beyond me. Wait, I get it, they do JFK-LHR over and over also.

True OGs did 5 hours of airport standby in the dark of the night with no departures left, because "There might be a repo"
There never was a repo.

Massive, MASSIVE thread drift..........

........sure, airline flying can be boring AF.

But if one is the type to get to the airlines and expect excitement/adventure, then they need to SERIOUSLY need to reexamine where they reap excitement/adventure from.

Seriously, it's one of the easiest jobs on the face of the planet for a decent sized check that clears twice a month.

Find time for the pursuits/hobbies you never had time for while in the military, build friendships/relationships you never had time for in the military.

I seriously feel sorry for the guys that make flying such a big part of their indentity/purpose in life that before they know it, their wife has left them, their kids don't talk to them, they won't even know their grandkids......

“Work (as little as possible) to live, NOT live to work”

In short, get over Macho Grande

pfffffft, true OG's did it back in the day when reserve wasn't considered duty.

Sit 12 hours airport standby, THEN get called for a 8-10 hour duty period that turns into 12-14 ACTUAL DUTY.

You know what? I'd gladly trade my 35 orthopedic surgeries, inability to have kids without having to spend $100k in IVF and surrogates and waking up every day in pain for going from college to Delta without doing that ****. Join the Navy and end up on more Army deployments and then deal with chicken**** leadership..

And to be "Rewarded" with that by fighting the VA to get 70% disability, and shown the door at 14.5 years active when they started 15 year retirements a year later.

I will take 10 years of LGA-ATL over having to put an overweight SH-60B on a single spot ship, single engine, at night, ever again.
