I feel like you slipped through the cracks. I have been turned away at the Centurion lounge in PHL and CLT as far back as 2018 with a non-rev pass.

You definitely did. It's in their rules to keep airline riffraff out. I once went in the SEA Centurion and it was 9/10 DL crew. This was before they changed the rule. Now the only way to get in there is to get cleared for a seat early or to just use the refundable ticket hack.
Amex has tightened the rules a bunch in the last few years to cut down on crowding, but there are often lines out the door anyway. I had a platinum card for years but finally decided it isn't worth it any more. I switched to gold and am swimming in points that I can use how I want to.

Just thinking about upgrading my old Amex to the Platinum and wondering if its worth it.
There are better cards for less money, in my opinion. The centurion lounge is a non-benefit. Chase Sappire Reserve & the Ritz Carlton Card have more benefits that you would frequently use as a pilot.

I checked in on my phone and it gave me a QR code, when I went to the front, the guy couldn’t scan it for some reason. And just said I can’t get it to scan you’re good to come on in.

…. They probably aren’t used to getting Spirit boarding passes lol.

Amex needs to stop waiving the annual fee for military members.

Southwest allow for flight changes for free. You could just change it once you get into the lounge. However, the long wait and how crowded it is in the lounge is not worth it anymore. I use to go in there 4-5 times a month.

It's not a Amex thing, but I believe it's a rule that CC issuers can't charge annual fees for active military.

Okay. Change the terms and conditions: "cardholders who have their annual fee waived under SCRA are ineligible to enter the club for free and must purchase a day pass if crowd levels permit" or some such.

From what I understand, it is just that they can't charge it while deployed, but Amex waives it as long as you are on active duty.

Honestly, the number of active duty folks using the lounges is marginal. I doubt it's enough to even be a rounding error. Most active duty military rarely use commercial air for travel as a regular part of their job and can't afford heavy leisure travel. I am sure Amex knows this. It's a nice benefit for military folks, so who cares?
