Unpopular opinion....

Shoe shaped shoes with heel rise, narrow toe boxes that squish toes together, stiff soles, a snug fit that blocks foot splay, arch support, etc might be the worst possible thing for our feet and body. Wearing something that is contrary to how the foot is designed to work in nearly every aspect might cause issues in the long run.

I literally never said anything other than; “genuine question, why boots?”

what are you going on about?

been looking at these; Heritage roper western boot from Ariat or the Justin roper boots from Justin boots.

which ones do you all prefer for those that wear boots?
I've got these Ariats (Turbo Chelsea Waterproof - carbon shank and toe) for winter and they're great for icy ramps and snow. I also have a pair of "cold weather" Blundtstones and they're horrible on ice, so I can't recommend them. I also bought these Ariats (Sierra work boot) and have only worn them a couple of times because I get tired of having to fix my pant legs when I get up.

I do also have the RM Williams Comfort Craftsman I don't wear them to work, only because they're not black. I do think the RM Williams could last someone's entire career and they are very comfortable. Australian sizing is a little different, so it helps to try them on in person. I got mine at an RM Williams store in Austin probably 8 years ago or so.

Well, I guess to protect yourself from having snow that's on the ramp (or elsewhere) from entering your regular low cut shoes and making your ankels/socks wet.

"Genuine question", has this not ever happened to you? If "yes", that's "why boots". If "no", then you'll understand "why boots?"

Precisely!

With deep snow piled up on the ramp last night in IND, I was very thankful I had my Ariat ropers on...which are some of the most comfortable shoes I own!

no, it has never happened to me. Been a pilot for 7 years, west coast routes and other reasons. I was taken aback why I was asked “are you sure you’re a real airline pilot … etc”

Dude, you're making way more out of that statement than needs be. "Are you even an airline pilot" is something that's said in jest all the time about some of the BS we put up with. Don't take it personal.

Weird, I've flown "west coast routes" too!!!!!!!

Pretty sure I've had snow/slush in;

SEA
GEG
PDX
EUG
YVR

Or any other place here that has a "short hop" desitnation from the west coast in a neighboring state. RNO, BOI, etc.
