IATA Calls for Raising Pilot Age Limit to 67

I’ll add what seems arbitrary is most fair. To change arbitrary to arbitrary would objectively be unfair. It’s less about benefit or suffering. Keeping it the same is fair.

Like it or not we live in a world with limitations and structure. And sure, my experience is anecdotal but there are studies out there on cognitive & physical decline. It's a bummer, but past 65 is where the decline starts to happen (see Seattle Longitudinal Study) and like others have said here, all of us probably don't want the inept feds looking deeper into our lives if it comes to that. One of those careful what you wish for things methinks.

Of benefit to a few and burden to many. All the same, no jeopardy vote for incumbents. So it’ll likely pass. Pity.

And historically we’ve been adept at raising the age right before a giant recession. Add a glut of pilots coming thru the pipeline and we’ll all become cheap labor again. History usually repeats.

We have let our kids down in so many ways. Just another case in point. Shrugging is a hard habit to break.

Driving a F1 car on the Monaco circuit is nothing like flying an airliner. Apples and Mangos. First start with the physical demands. Driving an F1 car takes a huge toll on the body. I race my GTR. I'm over 60. It's not F1, but it's still competitive racing. And I'm usually placing in the top 5. So what? Flying an airliner isn't like dog fighting. When SHTF, we talk first about making time.
As far as the ASAP/NASA etc thing, none of you are trained psychologists. You're in no position to determine cognitive ability. You all brush off experience like it doesn't matter, but you were hired at a major airline for just that - your experience.

I’m sure we’ve all flown with people who, particularly in the sim, are way beyond their prime in handling the aircraft. It doesn’t require a psychologist to know that it’s time to take the keys away from some people. The only way to keep that in check is by a general age or changing the way we assess performance.

Wonder how many in their 60s will understand what just happened to their kids in flight school as a result for their support for this. A decade of delayed career expectations.
