so does that mean the recalled pilots have been released from their seat lock? my buddy says they can't do this until all recalled pilots have had the opportunity to bid the 320. that is also what a friend of mine who is in training told me too.
things may have changed.

I always wondered this myself. I know that recalls are coming back to the -9 and I think they are seat locked for 2 years. I can't imagine they would be happy with new hires going to the 320, but it was mentioned as a possiblity to us when offered the job. I think they are way backed up on the -9 training, and want to put the new hires in the 320.

NWA is contractually prevented from awarding new hires the 320. You will be awarded the 9 or the 747-200 SO in initial training. As a new hire you are not seat locked in your initial equipment award and can bid off your initial equipment whenever your seniority will allow you to do so (could be the next training cycle). In short, you will not be awarded the bus in initial.

Quote your source!!!! We have hired into the A320 historically and will be doing so in February. This is straight from 2 APD's and the Fleet Training Captain.

I guess HR lied to me when they called and offered me the job.
They said there would be "3" possibilities to my class, FE ANC, 9, or AIRBUS 319/320.

23.B.5.C of the NWA pilot's contract:
B.5.c. A recalled pilot who incurs a training freeze under Section 24 E.3. and/or Section 24 E.4., as a result of the position to which he is recalled as provided in Section 23 B.5.a. , shall nevertheless be released from such a freeze and be awarded a vacancy to a higher preference on his EPL if that position would otherwise be assigned to a new hire pilot under the provision of Section 24 E.2.d. The Company may also elect to break a recalled pilot’s freeze pursuant to Section 24 E.11.

What if they do it before the recalled pilot is eligible for his EPL, is that a possibility? Not trying to argue, just curious.

I think this is the correct interpretation. I have heard they are so backed up the -9 training guys are getting 1-2 weeks off in the middle of training. I think the -9 is going to be well staffed soon, and they will have no choice but to put new hires in the 320. That, of course, will require them to lift the seat locks on the recall pilots.

Four guys in the Dec 31st class got one week off between indoc and 9 systems ground school, the rest of the class just gets the weekend off (Jan 12th and 13th) and then starts 9 systems on the 14th (with the sim to immediately follow) so I don't really think the 9 training is all that backed up (otherwise there would be more time off between indoc and systems) at the current moment but that still doesn't mean they won't be putting new hires in the 320 soon, anything's possible.

I have heard a rumor that NWA pilot union was putting forth to management an idea that would bring DC9 pay up to A320/19 pay. I guess the union believes that this would save NWA money in training cost. Has anyone at NWA heard of this proposal?
