Any chance of you getting a reserve job at Hill AFB? Your QOL is going to be so much better living and flying out of SLC. Also, I was domiciled at 4 different bases during my time at Delta, and I thought that SLC was the best base by a long shot.

Coop,

There are a few things you need to understand about jumpseating on Delta, or any other airline. First of all, at Delta you can reserve the jumpseat (on Delta mainline flights only) 4 days in advance if going to work, 3 days in advance if returning from work, and 1 day in advance for any other personal travel. You can't reserve the jumpseat in advance on SkyWest or ExpressJet. What does this mean to you commuting from RNO? It means a lot. It's the difference between having a reserved jumpseat on a Delta mainline jet, or hoping that there will be an open seat in the back, or a jumpseat available on SkyWest/ExpressJet. It sounds like you will be at the mercy of these two carriers to get to work (SLC, that is). Not an ideal place to be, in my opinion.

I commuted from SAN to SLC regularly, and it was pretty easy because I had a handful of Delta mainline flights I could count on to get me there. I used SkyWest a few times from SLC to SAN, and it was hit or miss. I couldn't believe how many times during the summer I was told the RJ was weight restricted, and couldn't take a jumpseater. If this happens to you in RNO, I suppose you could drive to SLC and make your sign in (from long call), but I basically see this as setting yourself up for a painful existence.

Absolutely. You'd need a crashpad or a motel room for short call in either SLC or LAX.
FYI ExpressJet flies only 145XR's out of RNO which are nearly never wait restricted. Only heard of it once and it was dispatched on a 3 hour flight (3585 multiple alternates) full. We love commuters so you can count on a seat if one is available.

Washout, thanks for the info. I think I will try and make a go at Delta. I still have some time so when I get out of the desert I will all my ducks in a row. With some good work, maybe I'll get in and be lucky enough to be based out of SLC or LA.

When does the LAX 737 base go "live"?

Thumbs up Weight Restricted SkyWest RJ's out of SAN to SLC

Even then some pilots would make it work if you could penetrate the bureaucracy and talk to them. Maybe this wouldn’t be a factor on the shorter Reno flight – perhaps some of the Skywest guys could help you out on that one.

I also commute SAN to SLC, on both Delta and SkyWest. I've never had anybody tell me in the past year that an RJ was weight restricted, but apparently this has become a problem with gate agents telling non-revs that, including our own pilots.

I have NO IDEA how they determine this, but believe me, if the seat is on the plane, the SkyWest crew will get you on.

Our company jumpseat coordinator is aware of this issue, and when this happens, we're supposed to notify him so that we can get this stopped.

If they tell you at the gate the "weight restricted" line, first ask them if a seat is physically unoccupied. Then ask to speak to the captain. We need to get this fixed.

Wonder if anyone could tell me if it would be worth asking to speak with captain. I'm trying to get from LAX to BFL. Without knowing the load the gate agent said "it doesn't look good this is a weight restricted flight" I do think it is pretty full because delta rebooked everyone on after they canceled their service.

So is this BS? Should I just go with the flow as normal or should I stand up for myself??

LAX to BFL is a United Express Brasilia so I'm sure it's weight restricted. Still... try and talk to the Captain. Sometimes ops will plan a certain amount of bags and the ramp will load a lot less. If you can get to the Captain, you increase your chances of getting on.

Edit: Sorry... are you taking Delta Connection Express Jet to BFL out of LAX or United Express Skywest?

As of today (or close of business yesterday), there is no more Delta Connection ExpressJet out of LAX.

I keep hearing NW will move from terminal 2 to 5 (us), and free up the space, but for what purpose, I don't know. I really hope they have something cooking in the west coast. Bring back the glory days of Western!

The latest rumor in LA is that all of SkyTeam plus Alaska are going to move into terminals 5, 6, and 7 at LAX.
