Default DAL to Hire

Barry Wilbur -Director Crew Resources and Scheduling at DAL said in Flight Ops 411 - May 28, 2008 that DAL was the 1st airline to make the domestic "fuel" capacity reductions and if all things stay status-quo DAL will need to hire 150-200 pilots beginning as early a Dec 2008. This is to staff the new 777s that are staffed at 32 pilots per plane.

Not terribly new news as this has been the rumor, but the 1st official public statement on it from DAL.

32 per plane! Holy Sh:t! Here at UPS were at 12 a plane on the Intl. side. And the gaol from the mother ship is that they want that number way lower. I think we need DAL work rules.

It's probably not that our work rules are so great, but rather that the utilization rate of the 777 (and all other transoceanic equipment) is very high. Don't forget, we fly on weekends, too.

I was just going to say that.

Very rarely do you see a passenger long haul airplane sitting around for a long time at an international outstation if there is no MX being done to it. It turns around and goes back to the hub.

I don't work for UPS or FDX but those planes can be seen sitting idly on cargo ramps noticeably more than pax planes internationally. Not that it's a waste of them, just a different schedule I suppose.

Domestically, I agree with you. I don't know,...we fly the bejesus out or 11's. I picked up a plane in HKG the other day that in the preceeding 24 hours had gone from; EWR-MEM, MEM-ANC, ANC-NRT, NRT-HKG. I was taking it back to ANC. There are no weekends or holidays in our international system anymore.
I sure miss the long layovers!

At UPS our Intl. birds are flying close to 15-18 hours a day. They never sit over 5 hours anywhere, and are usually turned in about three hours. Still 32 per aircraft is a number I would love to see.
