Since you boeing folks seem to think that airbuses need someone to baby sit a computer instead of flying. Using your reasoning, Space shuttle pilots wouldnt be real pilots, that they are just there to watch a computer!!! Try to tell a shuttle pilot that the space shuttle flies him

I've never seen the space shuttle computer take over and fly it into a bunch of trees

I assume you are talking about the air show incident?
The computer didn't "take over". It did what it was supposed to do, the pilot screwed that one up. Some of the "problems" that came out of that were fixed. You CAN push the instinctive disconnect buttons for the autothrust, and the autopilot off and take over "hand flying"
I haven't flown a Boeing-I have flown an MD80, and now the bus. Like 'em both. But honestly, A LOT LESS work on the bus. I feel less beat up after a day's work.

On one hand you state the pilot screwed up .... on the other hand you state some of the "problems" that came out of that were fixed.

To me that sounds more like Airbus had some programming that was screwed up.

Question - would the same thing have occured - that is, going into the trees - in that infamous accident if the guy was flying a Boeing?

Never flown an Airbus guy.

Default End of Debate

Why would anyone ever want to fly an airplane that took the decision making and manuevering away from the pilot ? Anybody that supports a company and an aircraft that is trying to desgin the pilot out of the cockpit is foolish.

Airbus studies emergency traffic avoidance system to act without pilots

System would shift responsibility for emergency air traffic avoidance manoeuvres from flightcrew to autopilot

Airbus is studying development of an advanced traffic collision avoidance system (TCAS) that would automatically manoeuvre the aircraft away from a potential mid-air threat without input from the flightcrew.

It all boils down to this.....both planes are good (A-320 just a little better though). When the automation quits, you still have to fly the stuppid thing.
Those with military training started out with a stick, and it just so happens that sticks RULE!

I know you boeing people seem to think the airbus computer is like the evil mind of its own computer HAL from 2001 space odesy. Where do you get the idea the computer controls everything, and the pilot cant do anything to stop the evil airbus computer. The idea of the plane flying itself in to the trees is stupid, guess what the pilots can do...... turn OFF the autopilot! its not a hard concept. The computer only controls the plane in auto pilot, like every other plane out there. If you want control, turn off the auto pilot! not hard

Yes, it would have just looked more dramatic b/c the Boeing would likely have stalled so you would probably have seen a roll into the trees instead of the Bus sitting there in Alpha prot just above the stall. Plane crashes either way, I guess one could argue that the deal was less violent b/c it didn't stall, although I don't think that makes what they did any better.

I disagree, when the pilot tried to add power and go around the plane would have followed his commands. The aircraft would have not been locked into the landing mode There is no way a lightly loaded airliner can cruise along at 150 feet altitude for over a mile and not accelerate, unless the computer would not allow it, as the computer thought it was time to land. This is why Airbus had to change programming to not allow that scenerio to happen again. Sure the pilots had the plane in the wrong "mode" but once there, they had no ability to fly the aircraft out.
