Delta to hire in late fall
#81
I find that interesting, certainly not what I'm hearing from my buds that work at the airline and have spoken with said CP. I'm not on the property, so I'm an outsider looking in, but it would seem to me that with the winter months coming and the busy summer season/merger going through, they'd need to something either way.
Still - his "No" definitely puts the damper on the idea there is hiring.

How can we have guys bidding SILS and expect to be hiring???
I do not see DAL hiring anytime in the near future. And just because management says we are getting more 777s, we all know that can change in a heartbeat.

True enough.
I have always had a hard time believing that we would hire, but the powers that be (read Flt Ops leadership) has stated; since the last interviews were done, that we would need to hire.
Now if there has been a workaround to the SLI and SOC to bring NWA pilots to our side, I can see the leadership not being in the loop on that, Not completely(in the loop). Nothing is final until the in of the signatures are dry on the contract.
The short of it is, We are in a very dynamic situation here at Delta. Things will change multiple times before we come out of the other side of this.

Delta has offered SLI's every fall since they were contractually approved. We had them last fall and hired a bunch after that. There is always a big draw down in flying for Sep and Oct. That drawdown has become even larger with the increase in international. The larger drawdown in the fall means a bigger increase in the spring. The 777's are firm orders on the production line and already plugged into routes for the Spring. I would be very surprised if they did not show up. They even purchased another SIM to handle the training which is up and running. I would bet there will be some hiring late fall for the Spring schedule. If not we are going to be very very short next summer.

Part of the reason for the SIL's is retrofitting aircraft with inflight entertainment systems. It is easier and cheaper just to pay someone to stay at home than put out a displacement that would only last part of the year. I know this is the case in the 767-400 aircraft.

So, to put this thread back on topic...
I was in the Pilot Lounge in ATL this morning and Richard Anderson (DAL CEO) happened to be there talking to the Chief Pilot and any other pilot that cared to gather around to hear him speak. So I joined the peanut gallery and listened to some Q&A. A pilot who owned a crash pad asked if we would be hiring anytime soon. Richard Anderson said "No." I implied from his tone and the way that he answered that it won't be anytime soon either.
Sorry, I wich I had better news to share.

Talked with my asst CP source about setting up a date for my buddy to do a pre-screen and he said that crew planning is now telling them to "hold off" on them. They want to see how the SLI works out and exactly where we stand manning wise (with respect to what NWA does and I guess we have some guys in the pool as well), so probably nothing on the hiring front until early next year.

Off to hope the Bengals don't disappoint.
