The hat is a symbol of a bygone era, and if you look around at crews worldwide today, you'll find that most airlines have ditched it. It definitely has a timeless and classy look, but, just like the F/A hat, it has gone by the wayside.
I like the optional rule... those that like it, wear it... those that don't, don't. End of story. It has nothing to do with professionalism. A hatless pilot with a buttoned blazer and everything neat looks just as professional.

"The military-style jacket and pilot's cap and the pilot's bars that hark back to the role of ship captain just wouldn't send the right message, (Ann) Rhoades thought. JetBlue pilots would instead wear bright-blue short sleeved shirts, which made them look more like bus drivers, but perhaps that was the point."
"Blue Streak: Inside jetblue, the upstart that rocked an industry", by Barbara Peterson. Chapter 6.

Not pay specific but the negotiations web site has today's update: American Airlines Negotiations
It does not give the pay rate but shows the proposed 'Banded equipment.' I find it interesting that the A319/B737-700 are in a separate group, can we say B scale.

Not sure if the Delta +1 means 737 or a blend or what.

Take a look around the airport. The skycaps who take the luggage curbside wear hats and epiletts. The same with the folks pushing the wheelchairs. It's getting tougher and tougher to easily spot the air crew anymore. Most of our traditions are getting watered down. Which I suspect is intentional.

Sorry but most airlines internationally use a hat as part of their uniform, I can't really think right now winch airline abroad doesn't use hats, Europe maybe because in Asia and the M.E. all airlines do

Hats no more, just another management tactic to chip-away at this once great and respected profession. Ironic how most pilots have embraced this subtle transformation. WE have merely been reduced to the miscellaneous ranks. Next phase, CAPTAINS AUTHORITY!!... chip,chip-away, after all they're lucky to have jobs.....

they dont wont to wear a hat because it ruins the moose on the hair and where would they rest there sunglasses if they were wearing a hat. All due to the self entitlement group in the business. It is also a way management uses to diminish the professional appearance of a pilot to the traveling pilot. If you look like a bus driver you are looked upon and treated as such. Same goes for the F/A's. Just ask them about the disrespect given them on a flight.
