If you were to look at pay scales at UAL over 27 years, you'd see that the net percentage gain is greater in the narrow bodies. The UAL MEC that was in office during the first few years was mostly narrow body pilots.

If Glenn Tilton had gotten his way, there would not have been any narrow body airplanes at United. TED was meant to be a non-union low cost carrier. I'm surprised it didn't happen, given the high-powered, corrupt, sociopathic scum he was working with.

When our pensions got flushed, the senior guys lost a lot of potential earning power due to the short time left to make it up, as well as a much higher dollar value lost due to the longer time invested in their pensions.

TW
TW,

Good points, and yes, if Tilton had his way the LCO would have been spun off. There is always give and take in the negotiation process. It all boils down to a dollar figure. We all know that.

But there have always been senior centric gains in most of the negotiated contracts, BK or not. Take C2000, Capt Int'l override (really, override originally intended for F/O's exercising type rating in the left seat), "Senior" manning (can't have the low end of the aircraft list getting good deals before the senior get a chance), wide body 28% vs narrow 20% increase (with a special after MR pay chart inserted to help cover that disparity...Delta Dot aside.

It goes both ways. The difference now at UCH and across the board is that nobody on the property is really junior. Sure, they are at the bottom perhaps, but have been there a long time. While there were times with guys waiting 12 years to move from the panel, they were chugging away and getting a guaranteed pension having more relative job security. With the FAE final 3 being the factor to help retirement, it made sense to take from the junior to plus up the senior. Now, folks will see an entire career without ever seeing the left seat. The approach to pay has to be changed. It is no longer about how long you have payed your dues.

Now, it's about the how much you make now.

My 2 cents.
Frats,
Lee

Semantics, but there's a HUGE difference between having longevity, and having seniority. They're NOT the same thing.

Doesn't matter how long a guys been on property, he'll always be junior to those above him. As well as treated as such, no matter how many years of service they have.

Here's another perspective. Everyone looks at the published pay rates for an airline and imagines how much they will be earning at year 5, 10, etc. Below is my actual pay compared to what United's book rates are:

Year...My W2 earnings.....Contract rates (85 hr avg).....Difference

1.......$27,122..................$33,660.......... .................-$6,538
2.......$51,273..................$53,040.......... .................-$1,767
3.......$75,214..................$76,500.......... .................-$1,286
4.......$22,348..................$81,600.......... .................-$59,252
5.......$0.00.....................$83,640......... ..................-$83,640
6.......$0.00.....................$85,680......... ..................-$85,680
7.......$29,185..................$87,720.......... .................-$58,535
8.......$69,144..................$90,780.......... .................-$21,636
9.......$84,951..................$91,800.......... .................-$6,849
10.....$64,640..................$92,820........... ................-$28,180
11.....$2,490....................$93,840.......... .................-$91,350
12.....$0.00.....................$95,880.......... .................-$95,880
13.....$0.00.....................$95,880.......... .................-$95,880

........Actual.................Contract........... Difference

.......$426,367...........$1,062,840...........-$636,473
.......$32,797/year.......$81,756/year........-$48,959/year

Contract rates are just numbers on paper, not real money. God forbid anyone actually believe those rates and make life decisions, like what kind of house they can afford or how they will pay for their children's education.

I made $145,000 my third year at CAL. Sometimes it sucks and sometimes it doesn't.

Good for you, and some guy really did get rich selling (insert your favorite multi-level-marketing pyramid scheme here), but most did not. Those kind of statements are the ones that sucker 18 year olds into wasting their lives in this dead profession.

Bc you upgraded and than downgraded back to FO...welcome back to reality!

Many of your CAL buddies did not see 6 digits for many years ...funny that you would brag about your salary since CAL had one of the weakest/lowest paying contract among legacies.

UAL SUX- Have you been offered one of the slots over at CAL? Understanding it isn't a perfect deal are you close to going?

UAL SUX, sorry for your misfortune in the airline industry. I'm a guy that likes to look on the bright side. You were obviously a highly qualified pilot both times you were furloughed. Did you try to jump anywhere else is much more lucrative? UPS,FedEx, SWA, China, Middle East?

So other than the money, what is the "bright side" of China and the Middle East? Is it that you can have a "high definition" virtual relationship with your wife and kids through Skype?
