Default United/CAL 757 schedules

Hi guys,

I was curious about what kind of schedules 757 pilots can achieve at CAL/United. I know these may vary widely from base to base, but are 3 day trips common? How junior is EWR? Do you foresee growing 757 bases in ORD or IAD?

I am really wondering if 3 day trips are reasonable to expect....i.e. Europe trips.

Thanks for your information!

As a bottom lineholder/senior reserve on the 756, here's what you can expect-

IF you get a line, it will be primarily 3 day low credit trips. Expect 6 of them for the month. (Yupe- 6 crossing, 18 days work!)
You may get a 6 day trip in there too, or a DH IRO trip.. we do the 'W' with the overnight in IAD. Commuters like them, I live local and would rather do back to back 3 days. Get home in between~

If you are reserve (most likely), you will either get A (Long call/12 hr) or B (Short/3hr). Again, 18 days on.
On reserve, you will fly (primarily) the crappy 3 days that line holders trade out of. GLA, BHX, SNN or BFS; with the occasional EDI, DUB, LHR. Might also get tagged for a 6 day LHR, AMS, DUB, MAN or CDG.
We are also starting to do some Domestic stuff with the fleet, so expect the low credit time stuff that people drop.

I say 'If' because there are times where you will be way below holding a line.. and somehow you will! Guys (and gals) senior to you bid reserve to get certain days off, or because they know that bidding reserve in certain months will let them stay home ALOT.
[In Jan, I was on B-rsv and flew 2 trips, and in May I bid B-rsv and flew 4 trips~ Could have been a line holder. In Sept, I should have been a reserve guy, but got a bottom line!]

All in all, it's not bad (depending where you came from, where you live, and what you like). NOT GREAT but could be worse~
That being said, I am a NO Vote (on the JCBA) unless there are some major improvements to the way we 'operate' on the 756 BES.

Hope this helps.

756 FO EWR

PS> Expect EWR if you get the 756. The IAH 756 base will be shrinking..

That's great info. Thank you very much. Are there mechanisms in place to allow for trip trading, dropping of trips or advertising? Do you have schedule flexibility?

How junior is EWR for the 757 and do you foresee it staying that way? Do you expect guys to get hired directly into the 757 when hiring begins?

Do you feel it is possible to live in sit long call reserve in CLE and make it to EWR for assignments?

Finally.....will the 787 be replacing the 757 in some capacity?

Sorry for all the questions....but I certainly appreciate your time!

Wow.. alot of questions!
Ok, here goes-
As a line holder, you are able to trade for any trip that ends up in open time due to sick calls/whatever.
You set up your phone for 'Open Pairing Alert' and then you try to be the first to call in when something falls.
Typical, a good trip pops into open time and then it's a mad rush to call in. But it trickles down.. so you might not get the MXP or TXL but whoever traded into that now has their trip in open time. Usually ends up being LHR.. all about being able to dial fastest.
[I've usually trade my whole crappy schedule for London's and some Germany trips~]
Dropping is tough as we are manned so poorly..
Adv does work, depends on what you're doing/looking for. I usually pick up an Adv to make up for a trip drop due to mil leave. Have also had some of my stuff picked up in Adv too... which then gives me more flexibility for mil leave and other things. It's hit and miss.
[Have already mutual trip traded a 6 day AMS for two 3 day DH OSL's.. and have already adv one away!]
It's a weird system, but it actually works~

The 756 (we are qualified to fly both.. 75 and 76) has guys (and gals) who were hired (UAL Furloughs) from the last wave. So it's just as junior as the 73.
The word I'm hearing is that yes, there will probably be new hires (off the street) go into the 756. That's how I got it! How many and at what pace, I don't know.
IAH is (supposedly) losing their 76-4's to EWR and along with that, some of their pilots. Things change here yearly now.

Yes, you can live in CLE and commute on A res. The type of flying we do, and with aggressive pick-up (picking up a trip in open time the day prior.. for reserves) allows for commuters to be at home on A. That's why alot of them pick 'A' over 'B'. But, A only pays 72 hours vs. B paying 76 hours.

As far as the 78 replacing the 756. Million dollar question.
Me, just my opinion- yes, in 3-5 years I think we will see the 76's being replaced by the 78's and IF we get a smaller 78 (-8's?!) then I also see the 75's going. For now, I think the 756 crowd is safe.. at least going into summer 2013.
I think (hope) that IF we have a JCBA & ISL by next year, then by summer 2014 we will be flying a combined CAL/UAL 756 fleet. 757-2/3's and 767-3/4's.

Word on the street is that our (CAL's) 76-4's are going from IAH to EWR for 2013.. but that their (UAL's) 76-3's may replace our 75-2's on some of the Germany flying that we do out of EWR (I hope not!). Time will tell.

Again, some of this is fact.. a few things are my opinion. Hope to see you on the line soon~

I can't thank you enough buddy. I really appreciate the info and you taking the time out of your day to pass it along to me. Thanks!

I'm trying to plan for the future and just want to make educated decisions if and when that time comes.

Kids, commutes and age are all factors.

What are the domestic 75/76 trips out of EWR? Mainly west coast trips?

Many automatically think the 757 life if better than the 737. Not so, especially if you are junior. The 737-800/900 pays the same as the 757-200/300 (for now). The junior 757 guys are flying all-night on 13 hour three day trips. You might do a lot better in the 737. Although the 737 pairings have been getting much worse. I can do 12 hour two-day transcons on the 737. I can get more days off and make more per month than when I was a 757 FO. I can hold any plane as a lineholder and I'm on the 737 for quality of life (pay is not that different either). It really depends on your seniority, but the 757 life is not that glamorous at "CAL".

What base are you in now? How long have you been there?
