Just curious what others think...where would you rather be at the bottom of the list between these two companies? DAL has a bunch of retirements coming up, but I feel that SWA has a great opportunity to grow into South/Latin America if they can ever get their act together with the AirTran mess. Realizing retirements are much more certain than growth, where would you hitch your wagon??

Is either one of them hiring right now?
I guess you don't have to make that decision until they both are...

That right there is some funny stuff!
In 1985 I left flying night freight at a UPS contractor, and bypassed Fed Ex, to go to Delta because they paid the best, had the best retirement plan, and bases where I wanted to live, BOS and MIA. I didn't want to fly one little airplane domestically the rest of my life either.
Now, both Fed Ex and SWA pilots make more than a Delta 777 Capt. and I lost a boatload of retirment money as well. Oh, and Delta closed BOS and MIA years ago.
Nobody know's what's going to happen to either Delta or SWA in the next 10 years, what looks good today might not look too good in 10-20 years.

Right now SWA and AirTran have a combined 3,800 flights a day so while near international flying will be a nice boost to SWA's bottom line it will not result in any substantial growth. SWA is currently overmanned so with the 717 transition as well as the new 800's adding capacity without adding airframes the bottom of SWA's list will be pretty stagnant for several years to come.

You never know who's going to be the next SWA or the next Eastern, but studying up and learning all you can about where you want to be is probably the smartest thing to do.
DAL and SWA don't look to be hiring any time in the near future, which is unfortunate, everyone I know and everyone I would be able to get a LOR from are at those two airlines.
That being said, money is important, but a great work atmosphere, with great coworkers and a bright future are more important to me than the amount of money I make or the prestige of who I work for.
