I had spent enough time in the military over there and knew I wanted no part of it. In hindsight I would bet he thinks he made a very large mistake as he is now slinging gear on a NB at United.
He got screwed in the merger. Just sayin.

Why does this post remind me of Bubba talking about shrimp?

I do enjoy a good UAE bash, but they are quite tolerant of our pork eating ways. The better grocery stores there have a non-muslim section where they sell pork at double to triple the price you'd pay back here. It was worth every dirham, and even though it had probably been frozen for months, that was easily the tastiest bacon of my life.

Waitrose in the Dubai Mall has a whole section marked PORK in large letters.

AP is reporting they caught the person who killed a schoolteacher by stabbing her in a ladies room. Same culprit also planted a bomb outside an American doctor's home.

Not with this much movement it isn't. Suck it up for a year maybe two, and there will be plenty of right seat micro climates to camp out in for a good salary and outstanding QOL for as many years as one has left.

For now. We are always one Act of God/recession/depression/oil crisis/terrorist act/ away from another aviation cyclical downturn. I'm only cautiously optimistic about the future when it comes to these retirement numbers and "OMG! Best hiring spree eva!" talks.

Left EK in the last year for the states. The difference in corporate culture couldn't be further apart. At EK I felt like just a small cog within a huge machine that they would provide the minimalist MX to keep me showing up to work. Three years of fatigue and working under locals with the IQ of a chimpanzee wears on you. The emirati chief pilots couldn't manage a lemonade stand much less a pilot group. Lucky enough for them they aren't required to do anything except say no.

I think my favorite part of the UAE was how much those guys were open to constructive criticism...

We've all heard that if you want to feed a man a day you give him a fish, if you want him to eat for a lifetime teach him to fish. The UAE added a 3rd category while I was working with their AF. They wanted to buy LOTS of very SHINY fish and then have me tell them what good fishermen they were.

Likeitis…

Very well said.

Some are wondering why guys would leave EK and go back to the US even after being a captain at EK….

It's all about the quality of life including how we are treated at EK (or the lack of that concept), the benefits of not being worked to death with very fatiguing rosters month after month with no letup, and… as one mentioned, with the hiring going on in the states, the appeal is high.

I know a few older guys at EK who are looking to go back and start at the very bottom of some seniority list (which would be strictly followed) just to get out of the sandpit and it's inadequate satisfaction of the job.

So sad too… it used to be a really good gig at EK but appears the bean counters have taken complete control and one individual who we call AAR (bonafide pilot hater) has just made it a horrible place …. so much so that guys even in their 40's are looking at starting all over back in the states. It's really not a difficult decision for them.
