I love the fence idea but management will not allow it, and how do we fence off DC-9's that are parked within 10 years? Do those displaced NW pilots only get to bid on equipment NW brought to the merger? Or do they "cross the fence" and displace DAL pilots?

How long do you think the MD-88's will be around?

Do you think NWA pilots will be flying the DC-9 in 10 years? Or, will it be pilots from the combined airline?

According to our route guys quite a few years. They are presently looking to expand the fleet by buying 20-30 MD-90s. You can get them cheaply, they are fairly new, fairly fuel efficient and we have the infrustructure in place.

A combo of retirements and the fact that many of our DC9s will be staying around, there will be plenty of room for a 10 - 15 year fence. Management will have to go along if they want a happy work force and an an agreement this month. Also, the percentage based SLI comes when the fence comes down.

Like I said in my post, I'm not trying to predict anything, just add factual data. Facts seem to be scarce on these boards.
Yes, a new contract might entice more to stay past 60. Another rumor I heard was that guys were delaying their retirements in hopes of getting a big chunk of equity from the merger. So far, the data doesn't really support that rumor.

Nearly all of the md88s were all built in the the 1990s. Do you really think that they'd be parked before the DC9s?

What they keep telling us is that the 88's, while I will be the first to say are not my favorite, are VERY cheap to lease. They are basically so cheap that fuel cost can not cover the difference between them and a new aircraft. At 60,000 a month in lease cost, vice ten or more times that number for a new 100 seater, the 88's and NW -9's have a real place in the combined operation. I really think this is true.
I think that if we get together those NW -9's are going to used agressively to knock down some RJ flying and cut DCI costs.
