Sennet, thanks. I am totally ignorant of any 121 flying. I guess if you have a line you go straight to flying each time you go out? I imagine commuting to IAD you would have to be there the night before anywhere from the east coast. Do you get flying benefits for your family and buddy passes? Thanks again!
Commute all depends on where you live, what base your commuting to, and what time your trip starts.
You can sign your family up for benefits. This also depends on which system you're in. And will cost you regardless.

Everyones all happy about instant lines when they get hired. But think about it. If you are getting a line right out of training that means your airline isn't properly staffed. It's short pilots, plain and simple.
Results of undertstaffing:
-Less days off.
-Less say in your schedule.
-Inability to manipulate your schedule.
-Increases junior assignments.
Keep those in mind also when you get all happy about having an instant line.

For guys new to 121, the reason for ZERO schedule flexibility is that you will not be able to drop or even swap trips. The reserve level is set and if there is a net NEGATIVE reserve level, that basically shuts down the ability to make schedule changes. The negative reserve level has been the case for most of this year.
Sample schedule
4 On
2 Off

Plan on 5 four day trips per month.
Plan on 11 days off per month.

IAD scheduling is severely understaffed. You will not get days you want or need off. You have ZERO schedule flexibility. You will be scheduled to the FAA maximum of close to 100 hours.

Would the same be true of Houston or Dallas bases?
Also how many do they need/plan to hire to alleviate the problem? Are they filling classes now?
Thx

We may have 20-30 people in each class, but these numbers should paint you a pretty interesting picture. They're not secret, anyone with way to much time on their hands can do the math for these #'s.
In a perfect world CA & FO #'s should be fairly close.
# of Eligible (Online and able to bid) Pilots.
August Schedule: 523 CA / 413 FO.
September Schedule: 512 CA / 395 FO.
October Schedule: 496 CA / 383 FO.
I'll let someone else point out the obvious conclusions from this.

Whats a realistic number to figure for per diem? Is this paid monthly?
Also is the salary paid bi-weekly? Running the numbers looks like a new hire without bonus and perdiem would be bringing like $1000 home every two weeks after taxes... does that sound right or are averages higher?
Just doing my due diligence.
Thanks

You hit it exactly. Mesa is NOT staffed properly. I'm IAD based and very very senior. I CANNOT get the days off I want, need or earned. I'm glad for the newbies but there is a dark side the recruiters don't tell you. You will get an instant line. With 5 leg days which is great at first. But when you are junior assigned after 2 or 3 of those trips in a month I would love to see that excitement then for having a line. Anyone coming to IAD PM me I'll give you the scoop. Great base I've flown all three bases. Small but GREAT GROUP OF PEOPLE

These statistics really should be broken up by at least colors, if not by base. Painting a picture of what is happening in DFW and PHX and SDF shows what is happening on the American side. IAH and IAD shows what is happening on the United side.
