It is all conjecture. Paul Foley would be pretty dumb to be opening his mouth if he had access to insider information. If he elaborated it with a "i am guessing..." then his opinion is as good as anyone elses and he is still pretty ignorant of keeping his work force's moral up isnt even a thought in his head right now. It is very rare to see a manager publicly or even in private express complete pessimism for their position. You have to keep the troops motivated.
It very well could happen but those that know if it really, truly are in the works ARE NOT talking about it outside of closed doors.

I'm not sure where the 700 number comes from but the BK is a very real possibliy, it was even in their reports. If UA opts out of the 26RJs and 10 Dash8s Mesa will be forced to file bankruptcy. The fact that he actually said UA will opt out is puzzling however. They probably already know it and are trying to lessen the pilot group to save some cash right now, otherwise there is no reason to announce furloughs 6 months in advance.

Sorry guys. Gotta call shenanigans on Foley's comments, if he ever made them. First of all, if he's still COO at Mesa, the bankruptcy statement is pretty irresponsible. I'm not saying UAL will or will not go bankrupt, but if it did, it would be IMPOSSIBLE for him to know when. And even if he did have accesss to inside information (and he doesn't) and he did know the date when UAL is going to declare bankrupty, I'm sure the SEC would love to have a chat with him about disclosing insider information as a company officer to a few guys.
Now perhaps UAL's contract with Mesa is coming up and United has let Mesa know that they're not going to desire Mesa's services anymore, or perhaps a portion of their services, and THAT part is true about furloughs, but a company can't just declare bankruptcy because they feel like it. United's officers wouldn't even have a date to tell Foley when bankruptcy is going to be declared because they wouldn't even know what financial trigger would cause the bankruptcy and what that trigger date would be. If oil went to $200 next month, maybe its August. If oil went to $30, maybe it's never. Again, the whole thing seems fishy.
