Respect your CA emails, XJT in Lubbock, facebitten stories in PHX. We don't hear/get any of this juicy stuff over in IAH!

 

I think it is just an overall change in the FO's attitude. Maybe it is just how this new generation is. It's like when you are a kid you think you know more then your parents. lol I have noticed the lack of respect with several FO's. The majority are awesome however. But some don't listen and want to prove how much they know. They do things without Captains permission in many ways when all they had to do to show respect was to just ask and most all captains are cool. This also is a lack of CRM. Stepping on your Captains feet is not cool tho. Bottom line, no matter how good you think you are or how right you think you are you should always be in the learning mode and should be in that mode forever even as a Captain. I still learn from my FO's, my mistakes, and anything new that comes along. Being humble is the best way to be.

Same for PHX. I can't think of anything other than the FA who got arrested in Reno, and eventually fired.

 

Also Captains do not micro manage your FO's. Give them a leash so they can learn.

I believe I flew with the captain who was behind that email (or at least one of them). He told me about an approach flown by his FO on a windy/gusty day following a heavy jet. CA noticed FO did not have his hand on the yoke as they got closer to the runway. CA said politely, (paraphrasing) "Hey, it'd be a good idea to hold the yoke considering the conditions. If we catch some wake off the heavy in front of us, it could really roll us and kick off the autopilot."

They got on the ground and the FO immediately went off on the CA, saying his IOE instructor told him he didn't have to have his hand on the yoke, and that the CA had no business lecturing him, and he knows what the hell he's doing, and so on.

Based on my brief time with the CA, he's a great guy and very easy to fly with. He seemed by the book and standard to me, and I look forward to working with him again, like nearly every captain I've flown with.

Moral: Don't be that guy. There's no ego on the flight deck. Always learn, always improve, always be respectful. We get sh*t on too much by our company, there's no need to sh*t on one another.

 

Exactly, I think I've learned more since being off IOE than when I was on it. Not hard to listen, ask questions and take suggestions. Gotta have some think skin in this business. But that FO sounds like a punk, every CA I've flown with keeps at least one hand on the yoke during the approach phase. I wasn't taught that during IOE either. But after asking why, it made sense and now I do it too. I guess with these phone interviews some entitled brat will come along every once and awhile.
