Just remember, every 100 of those bad boys costs the company $1 million. But the union and "the books" said there's no money? There will always be just enough money to keep seats warm in training. Notice how we are attriting pilots faster than we are hiring them (in a period of growth) and now the money starts to flow? I hope the MEC/NC gets it this time.
Read this the right way. This isn't a goodwill gesture by JO to line our pockets. CEOs don't do that, especially not in this business and especially not JO. He knows how dire this pilot shortage situation really is (see how he badmouthed the 1500 hour rule which is allegedly the problem) and he's being creative in how he hands out checks. That is called leverage for us. At least he is paying the right people for recruiting/referrals. I wouldn't be surprised to see $10k thrown at the newhires in the next 6 months though, because this shortage won't get better with the current contract.
I about blow a gasket every time I hear non-pilot management like JO say the regulations set forth by pilot types (FAA) are nonsensical. Sure there are flaws with the 1500 hour rule, but but to be clear, Jonathan, if you are reading this, there isn't an airline pilot shortage and the FAA isn't ruining your business. There is an airline pilot pay shortage. That's it. You pay us...we will come and stay for a while. Meanwhile, most of us will bail at the earliest opportunity for bluer skies.

Give those $10k to new-hires!!...what a slap in the face to them.
I guess greed trumps integrity if guys will refer someone knowing they will make 10 grand and new hires get squat...it's feeding the problem...my .02 cents.

Mesa, just give an industry standard contract and you will fill classes with actual quality candidates. There will be no need to pay 10K to pilots to try to sell people on why coming to the lowest paid regional, with the worst work rules is a good idea in an environment where you are worth so much more. It will take you 1.5 years plus to upgrade here if you come in with 0 121 time. That is a lot of time to only make 18K a year when there are a lot of places paying 40k+ with an actual pathway to the majors.

Yep, like I said before, this place is losing pilots quicker than they are coming in! He'll eventually capitulate and offer up an industry average contract, or go out of business.

You guys are complete idiots for falling into this trap. The more people that walk in the door, the less leverage we have at getting a decent contract.

1. Mesa gets an industry leading or industry standard contract. We become "too expensive" over night (See XJT) and lose current flying to the next lowest bidder (as contracts expire) and do not get awarded any new flying because we're no longer competitive. In the meantime the company pays pilots significantly more than they can afford to pay based on the contracts they've arranged with our partners and we work our way towards bankruptcy where we will be stripped of all the gains made by a nice contract.
2.) Pilots continue to come work at Mesa. The company continues to be awarded new flying based on our dirt cheap labor costs. This fuels the quick upgrades which fuels a steady stream of new hires. No significant contract gains will be made because there is no need.
The whipsaw will continue. The airline industry as a whole is downright insulting.
