Sorry Mesa. Too little. Too late.
Looks like even JO has SJS

I've found it often tells you an error has occurred and you need to refresh (MagPBS, maybe someone could take a look at that?). But aside from that it can be a good tool to see the state of our flying, if you'll get a line or still be on reserve, etc.
For reference...

If he's unavailable call back and ask to be connected to JO himself there's a good chance Marcian is in JO's office with his feet up letting him know there's no pilot shortage and everything will be just fine.

Go Mesa!
Marcian might be in JO's office under his desk on all fours with his mouth open and his pants around his ankles

Default Town Hall meeting

I went to the 'town hall' meeting two days ago at the Crystal Palace. It was pretty much a complete waste of time. Some notes as I tapped them into the phone as JO spoke:

In position to get new business

Negotiating for more airplanes with UA

Railed against ATP/1500 hour rule .. “by far our biggest challenge”

624 daily departures, 120 +/- aircraft

Mentioned increased 20k pilot referral bonus, “as a result we have over 300 pilots referred to us”

“For pilots, it's not just about pay” It’s about the career, the benefits, the upgrades, etc

“American .. (wholly owned regionals) have brought up their pay and we need to do so, .. ‘and we will’

$200m in engine overhaul costs coming due

Still looking to partner with a training school or a 135 operator to raise pilots ‘the Mesa way’

“The older pilots we have hired have twice as many failures, and double the IOE hours”

A question about Obamacare and the impact going forward with the new administration, re: Mesa and insurance...JO says 'it is what it is" ... "but I can tell you our insurance premiums are going down slightly next year ... with no reduction in benefits"

“Could be looking at adding 30 airplanes next year”

Marcin, Keenan (?) Talked about recruiting students and getting them in the Sierra program as an instructor. Then a question from the floor about ‘can't we hire applicants with 1000 hrs’?, and the response was flat out wrong

“If the growth doesn't come, well it's not the end of the world”... "what is so bad about growing just ten more airplanes?"

(Arno) says they have been seeing increased sick rates among FAs, and it has caused them to aggressively manage the reserve buffer

“I think we have a lot more airplanes coming”

He wants 76 seat airplanes on 12 year contracts

They had (have?) a new leasing agreement for another existing building at the 44th location, and that is where Training is going to move. Schedule is iffy because lease holder now claims $$ modifications are necessary If Mesa wants to save $$, Training will be on first floor of that other building and not second floor as planned (where mods are needed)

Then he had some questions for the 44th St folks, how do you like the flex work hours, how do you like the new floor, how about the artwork, etc. Some people think the new chairs are uncomfortable, and the water fountain tastes bad! OMG

For Hawaii, 'I want to go there' but without a major partner it's not realistic.

There is internal discussion about moving the IAD 700s to another location but the base won't be scaled down .. new airplanes potentially to replace/supplement

Take these notes at face value - I scribbled these into my phone as JO talked. What I found fascinating is how he repeatedly says, "I want to do (x)" on a new project/venture/etc but when talking about past failures, like Hawaii the first time, he says "we screwed up..." So the grandiose ideas are all his, but the failures are on all of us. The Hawaii example is just one, there were multiple subjects he talked about where it came across the same way.

Net result of the meeting was there is nothing substantive happening .. but they will look into the quality of the drinking water in the 7th floor break room.

And staff them how?

I don't suppose they elaborated?

So... I think current conditions prove you can't expect to lock in rates and expect your labor costs to remain fixed for one year, let alone 12. Unless they have the foresight and prowess to negotiate flexible labor cost adjustments, 12 year contracts are a recipe for labor crises, not stability.

For Hawaii, 'I want to go there' but without a major partner it's not realistic.

The common rumor is the IAD 700's going to Hawaii, and for a mainline partner (Delta? United?). Did they imply that wasn't the case?

Thanks for the update, by the way.

Sounds like the whole Hawaii thing is yet another bad rumor, and that any real expansion is still nothing more than just wishful thinking.

And, 300 pilot referrals apparently isn't the same thing as 300 pilot applicants. If it were, the classes would be full at 30 each.

He's pretty good at spinning ... but not good enough.
