Default Transitioning with some baggage.

Hey all,

I am an F/A-18 pilot soon to be F-35 pilot and will be nearing the end of my commitment in a couple of years and I do have a lot of interest in the Majors. Unfortunately, I was less disciplined in my younger days.

-I had about 7 or so speeding tickets all from 2011 and earlier.

-I got arrested and thrown in the drunk tank for a night in college (2007) with a minor consumption charge. As it was my first offense and I complied with the courts' programs, everything was dismissed. They were not expunged, though.

I'd like to know if this is this a show stopper or if I still have a chance. Also, any guidance on how to handle this when applying will be helpful. I know I was pretty stupid back in the day.

Currently about 1500 TT
500 civilian
1000 military
ATP
BE-400 SIC Type
Aviation Safety Officer
CRM Instructor

Thanks in advance.

For what it's worth, I don't think any of those are show stoppers, especially with the perceived imminent pilot shortage. There are plenty of folks out there who have gotten hired with speeding tickets (I had several), mishaps (of all classes), and even arrests on their records. Be honest, contrite, and humble about it but show how you've learned and grown from all that... that's all in interview prep. As long as you can show you've "grown up," kept your nose clean and have had performed well throughout your career, you'll be a strong candidate.

Nah...your intervening military years should vouch for your efforts to "tighten up" your game. As long as you're humble and candid about being a knucklehead in your earlier years, you'll be fine.

SEVEN speeding tickets, though? Jeez

I would have thought those would have stopped you from entering the military more than the airlines.

I have a friend that had an assault charge ( on a police officer) while in college and still flew in the navy.

What, seven speeding tickets? That's roughly (or less than) one a year by my math

How fast over the limit?

This is a serious question.

If you were going 20 over, probably no big deal.

If you were going 100 mph+ or 40 over, it may be seen as reckless = problem

The good thing is that is has been 6 years since your last one, so that works in your favor.

I don't know the exact speeds, but I know one of them was 40 over (my first one ever), but was not given a wreckless chage. None of the others were that fast.

I would hazard a guess that, in general, flying even one fighter would negate any youthful pre-military silliness. If the history was that bad, then the military would not have taken you.

Might be one or two airlines with a bug up their butt, but most of them should be fine.

The military doesn't mind kids who hang it out a little. They do mind theft, drugs, and violence.
