FAA Flight Check
#11
USMCFLYR,
Congrats on the FAA Job. I've been away from the boards for a while since I got my cush GS11 gig.
Getting back to one of your earlier comments, I too don't know what it's like flying the line and being on the road constantly, but as a federal civillian pilot I can say the life is good. Sure, airline captains will make more, and regional FO's will log more time in their books, but I'm usually flying 3-4 times a week and I'm home with my wife and kids almost every night. How many professional pilots out their can commit to coaching little league? I'll be able to by sticking around here.

Here is a good thread on the FAA Flight Check thread that would be able to answer many of your questions.
On USAJOBS.gov - you would want to search the 2181 series.

Thanks a lot. I'll read through all 13 pages tonight. Do you know of any/guard reserve guys doing this as their full time gig while supplementing with guard reserve duties? If so I assume is just 15 days mil leave like most technician positions? Or are most retired active duty guys?

There is a reserve squadron doing the same job, but the people I know in that squadron are full time FAA employees, supplementing the reserve flight check squadron. Many of the flight check pilots are retired AF pilots who were doing the job for the AF when they retired. It is a skill set that is easily transfered to the gov't world with the ASIP qualification and required type rating already obtained.

I've always had my eye (even before the military) on Federal Law Enforcement/ I do know two guys who are doing CBP, another who was hired and just waiting for the base assignment, and then one who turned down the offer due to base choice.
If you are looking into this then I wish you the best of luck!

The AF /squadron does the "Combat" Flight Check, but the FAA pilots do a lot of international flight checks. The FAA is basically contracted to do some work. They use the Challenger fleet for most of the work, but the Lears will do some of the work in the Caribbean. Other common places include Europe and the Pacific Rim.
