C-17 Gear Up
#111
What's similar to the last Class A, same MWS, same ICAO? Late transfer of A/C control to the IP. IPs and A/Cs- if you take it, especially close in- please don't solo it. Keep the crew w/ you.

Also curious, why would the gear warning be disabled...any C17 drivers, do you get the horn with the gear up and thrust at idle? The 141 had a horn cutout switch for partial flap landings...worked well untill a gear up landing at AMA.

GPWS and TAWS aural alert disable functions are opposite LSKs of the same MCD menu.
The C-17 gear warning horn isn't linked to throttle position like most planes. It's based on radar alt and flap position. If the GPWS is OFF, no warning horn, no light in the handle.

Evading a direct answer the best I can, it can be commonplace to disable the TAWS aural alerts if they are causing too many nuisance warnings. (i.e multiple terrain warnings when on glide path) Can't speak to the GPWS...for lack of speculation, I'll stick with the report

The toggle on the GPWS goes from NORM, to TACTICAL, to OFF. LSK Toggling to TACTICAL is necessary because the jet flies low-level routes(300ft) or steep apps where a GPWS would go crazy without some buffering for configuration, terrain prox, etc.

No, it is not a common occurrence. These guys screwed up. Period. There is no excuse for landing gear up. Period.

One excuse - combat ops - I know that location isnt very combatish and everyone goes there - but a young crew can feel the pressures. Besides it would be very unPC to take someones wings so I bet these folks get a walk. Any thoughts?
