C-17 Gear Up
#11
Although I have no idea what happened in this instance...
This is my opportunity to highly encourage others to do a gear down 1/2 flap "slow" (airspeed) descent. It's nice to have the approach and landing checklists done above F200 and have nothing to worry about other than threat avoidance and finding the runway.

looks like the flaps were down either before or after the landing

Stupid question, do you guys do your own "safety check" before landing?
It isn't procedure, but on short final, I always do a quick "gear, flaps, spoilers, brakes, landing clearance"
I always do this out of habit, and sometimes I would laugh at myself because I knew the jet would tell me if something was wrong. But after seeing this, I'm going to continue with my imformal check.

I always did my "4 C's" Called gear down, Checklist complete, Cleared to land, Configuration check. I still do it flying civilian, but have dropped the ear down call, obviously.
Anyone got the tail number?

Say it ain't so
Not to throw stones but isn't '002 the "Spirit of the Air Force" ?
poetic justice don't ya think?
Seem to remember 002 and "Spirit of Strom Thurmond" from my deployments to 332 AEW...another set of ironies since 332 is Tuskegee Airman wing but everytime I turned around saw DVs coming to base on "SoST" (Brought SECAF, CSAF, and few other CENTAF luminaries)

PS
Not bashing the crew, know a few CHS guys/gals but Big Blue can take a lesson

When are fellow pilots going to stop making lame excuses and apologies for what appears to be complete buffoonery. Professionals have standards and when one of our own makes a completely inexcusable, unforgiveable error it is high time we call a spade a spade and quit making lame excuses for why the crew did not do the most basic of before landing checks and put the gear down! This is just like the B-1 gear up landing a few years back.
There is NO excuse for a qualified crew to make an unintentional gear up landing. IF this recent C-17 landing is just plain old pilot error then they as well as the B-1 crew should never fly again and become greeters at Wal-Mart!
