Truth to power is great. Not going to change anything for Albie, but still great.
Albie, USAA's plans to leave Florida have been written about in several locations by USAA. Sucks, but, the hits the past few hurricanes put into the insurance pool just aren't sustainable. Do-able, maybe. But, I think the reality of the what-if sank in. What IF a Major hurricane hits MIA-TPA-PNS-PAM area in the same year, or even every other year. I think the insurance estimates were optimistic until recent history provided some ugly facts for consideration.
Just in the 11 years you've experienced, would you say more, less, or roughly the same number of people in the area? Florida hasn't been slammed by BRAC in the same way other states have, so, I'd say roughly the same number of AD folks but what's your impression of mil retirees-more, less, or roughly the same?
How many other major insurance companies are leaving the Florida market?
That would be Allstate, Nationwide, Prudential, and State Farm.
State Farm insures about 13.5M homes. Just under twice the total number of members USAA has.
Homeowners Insurance - State Farm
USAA Highlights
Business: USAA says it will limit new policies, end 27,000
It's a mutual association, not a suicide pact.
But that runs both ways, I would highly encourage every separated USAA member to periodically take a sample of the local providers and choose to stay or go.

Albie,
Tricia posted here (I'm guessing) because of a letter I sent to the CEO of USAA after reading your initial post. I sent them the link to this site. A few days ago, I received a call from the office of Gen Robles (Ret.), and I had a relatively long conversation with one of his staffers (I think it was Tricia). I explained to them that your post had illuminated some key points to several of the active members of this board, and I brought it to their attention out of respect for the company that has served so many of us over the years.
The point I wanted to get across to them was the old adage of speaking "truth to power"...if the good General is only hearing about how happy their members are, then he's not hearing the whole story. In this day and age of viral marketing, bad news can reach the masses faster on the internet than any multi-million dollar ad campaign could ever hope to do. (Just ask the guy who wrote the song called "United Breaks Guitars"...it was a nightmare for United Airlines.)
YouTube - United Breaks Guitars
The fact of the matter is that I never even considered shopping around outside of USAA until I read your post. If USAA is listening, and I believe they're a smart enough company to do so, they just might realize what is happening & make it right for guys like you. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with us here.

I monitor blogs, forums, Twitter, etc. looking for members to reach out to and coincidentally discovered this forum on Aug. 14. In turn, I posted my message upon seeing some of the commments.
We sincerely appreciate all of our members, and we thank you for your letter.
Thank you so much for your membership.

Has anyone had issues with refinancing their mortgage with USAA? I bought my primary residence in 2001 with USAA for an OK rate of 7 1/4. The service and process all went smooth and I was happy. I recommended USAA to everyone. Well, a few years later, rates were 5.5% with zero points. I decided it was a good time to refinance so I called USAA. They said they could get me 5.875% with 1 point. I told them I found 5.5% at three other places with no points and was there something they could do because I really wanted to stay with USAA. That is the problem with us military folks...we are loyal! Well, the customer service lady got very impersonal and said there was nothing that could be done. "We don't sell your loan" was one of her reasons for charging so much more. I could care less what they do with my loan after it is finished! I then told her I could take the 5.875 rate if they would not charge the points. Her answer was no. No asking her supervisor, no trying to work a solution out with me...just a no. I told her USAA would lose all the money they would be making from my loan if I took it somewhere else and this could be a win win for everyone. No again. I went elsewhere and got a loan for 5.25% with zero points and great service. USAA lost a lot of money over that one. I no longer recommend them for home loans to anyone and tell everyone my story.
Right now I have a very large life insurance policy with them but they are charging me double what the going rate is. The reason is they said the C-17 has not been added to their list of approved aircraft. The C-130 if you can believe it, is an approved aircraft and my rates would be a whole lot less if I flew that! I figure the grief factor with my surviving family would be less...from a customer service standpoint, but I am beginning to rethink that now.

USAA will, but the rates depend on the aircraft you fly. (i.e. the risk)
For example:
KC-135 < C-17 < F-15E
Navy pilots have the highest rates due to their high incidences of fatal syphilis.

Interesting times in this modern world...paying someone to monitor electronic media for comments about the company. Guess there are some new job descriptions out there in this twenty first century world...
With the speed and capability of modern internet comm, I guess it certainly makes sense.
Bottom line is the consumer has so much more real time info now than before...it makes it very difficult for companies to compete on reputation alone. It is very easy now to grab data, reviews, and customer feedback from a variety of sources.
