That may not be the only reason. When I PCS'd from NY to Louisiana, I was looking forward to much lower auto rates now that I'd be out of the NY rat race. Turns out my rates went up! I couldn't freaking believe it. Turns out the ridiculously lax Louisiana laws on uninsured motorists led to the 3rd highest rate of uninsured claims in the nation for Louisiana drivers. Oh well. Wasn't USAA's faults, everyone else at KBAD that I talked to had significantly higher rates after coming to LA, no matter what insurance company they were with.

Easy fix to those kinds of issues....a quick explanation of why your rates have increased when you expected them to go down would go a long way to ease one's mind.

I tried to finace one house through USAA...wont bother trying again...the rates were not even remotely close...as far as the homeowners insurance...much cheaper with excellent service from a competitor. I do have my current auto policies through them but will be checking around when I get home from Iraq.

About 20 years ago I tried to insure my bass boat wih USAA, they refused, said it went too fast...so I got a tip about Boat/US...fantastic company, great rates, excellent service for these past 20 years. USAA tried to get me back last year even though I have a newer, much faster boat...rates again couldn't compete with the company I left them for 20 years ago. No thanks. 20 years and a lot premiums lost.

I like USAA but they are not the company they were when my father, (USAA member of many decades) reccomended them to me when as I followed him in the AF.

Navy Mutual Aid Association was about 50% of the next closest I could find (which I believe was USAA) back in 2003 when I got term insurance for my wife and me. At the time, they were the only company with no aviation/war clause. If you're eligible, I have not found anybody that could find cheaper. They also offer up to $1M for you and spouse in the family plan now.

Well, funny how things happen....Two days ago my foot slipped off of the clutch while parking (in reverse) and my car backed into another car, dimpling the corner of the other car's bumper. There was no damage to my car. The other car is also insured through USAA. I reported the claim to USAA, indicating I was at fault. The agent was very professional throughout the conversation but at the end told me that this could cause my rates to increase. I told him I'd be saying goodbye to USAA if they raise rates on me. I had a glass claim in 2005 for rock damage to my windshield. Then my only other claim in 25 years was back in 1992 (about $5K, hit black ice and rolled my car). They said it's USAA policy to inform members of a possible rate increase anytime a member is at fault. What they really said to me was: Your 25 years of loyal membership with minimal claims bears no significance, we'll raise your rates if we think we need to.

I really don't think this will result in a rate change, but we shall see. I'll post an update when I have more info.

If you want to just an another insurance company, you will be...just another insurance company.

Today we cancelled my wife's life policy. So far, that is one house they canceled, one house we cancelled, three cars we cancelled, one flood policy we cancelled, and now a life policy gone. As soon as I get my new Mastercard from another bank I'll be 100% done. Looking forward to my $6000 subscriber's savings account payout.

Wish it didn't have to come to this but I'll save almost $5000 this year by moving.

That's sad...I never would have thought that USAA would allow themselves to sink to ebryone else's level.

I did a very informal poll of AD and Contractors (Retired) here at FOB Warrior and I was very surprised at how many had left USAA in the past 2-3 years. Only one had left for customer service related issues. Good customer service can only carry you so far..not enough to make up 5K!

The Army Air Force version is probably just as good if not better; had a better rate than SGLI. Rates available on line.

Well this thread got me on the phone with State Farm and Progressive. Called about auto insurance initially and both beat USAA.

That pretty well sums it up.

USAA used to be something special but with membership opened to just about everyone the underwriting risk profile mirrors the general public. As you've stated, it's not a particularly good deal any more.

Is anything said here on the forum regarding customer service or rate plans resonating at USAA? If the job is too monitor the forums to get a feel for the satisfaction of the patrons, I wonder if anything is making it to the ears of those in charge?
