Highly unlikely that a guy at 18 years would get Force Shaped, unless there is something else strange going on behind the scenes.

This reshaping isn't always a good thing. I flew with a Captain the other day. He was just flying as a civilian with me he wanted to build some time. He's 2yrs away from retirement and it's very possible he is going to be a vicitm of this force reshaping bit. He has given the military 18yrs of his life and will get NO retirement. Yes he will get some money but the retirement would have greatly outweighed it.
Also, with 18+ yrs, you are in the sanctuary zone and cannot be involuntarily separated in all but the most unusual of circumstances.

They are having a SERB (Selective Early Retirement Board) for Lt Col's and Col's.

Well, it all depends on what reasons you give your leadership for wanting to get out. I'm sure if you tell them you hate the AF for deploying you all the time and can't stay all the BS (which may be true), you may not get a very good reaction. However, if you come up with some constructive reasons as to why you want this, I can't see why they should hold it against you. My commander was very cool about it. He said that I had to do what was right for me and that my career progression, at least with him in command, would not be effected. I even had a sit down with the OG who questioned my reasons and he was cool about it too. Any leadership that purposely backstabs their people because they don't agree with why they want to separate may want to take a step back and realize that attitude may be the reason people want out to begin with. Yes, I was willing to "shoot myself in the foot".

I recently tried to submit a waiver to have my Palace Chase reserve commitment waived. It was disapproved, unfortunately. I got out approx 1 year ago, been with the reserves and FDX since then. For family reasons, we've decided to move to MEM so I thought I'd try to separate from the reserves altogether, move to up there and try to find an ALO or CAP job. No dice. The guys at AFPC PC office didn't think I met the hardship criteria for waiving the remainder of my contract. The MSGT in charge was an a**hole, no surprise there, but the 0-5 was pretty cool and took the time to talk about the situation with me for about 30 mins. He even reconsidered the request (big of him considering that he never read my letter in the first place, just let the MSgt handle it) and still didn't think I met the litmus test. Bottom line is that I'm going to move anyway and commute to my AFRES unit. Anyone else commute to a guard or reserve job? Anyone else ever get a waiver to their PC contract?

No he's just hit 18yrs. His story was he was enlisted in the army then went to college. He was transfered to the Airforce and his years transfered with him. At Laughlin AFB he works the Del Rio Approach. He isn't the guy you actually talk to he's incharge of them. He said that because of the reshaping they would be thinning out the people in his area and that is was very possible that his job would be on the choppingblock. I asked if he could just switch back to the army and he said that would be highly unlikely.

One time our navigator told us about an aging Ssgt with pilot wings who reported to their squadron in Vietnam. Word was that this guy had been repeatedly passed over for promotion due to many offenses; a total loser, slovenly, serving out his time until retirement. He barely did enough work to avoid a court-martial and associated with crooks and druggies on the Saigon streets. One day he disappeared, seeming to fulfill predictions that he would end up dead in a gutter. And then....several weeks later, he stopped by the squadron to explain and say goodbye. He was a Colonel, OSI undercover agent, who had finished his job busting a huge theft operation.

I'm glad to hear there are plenty of other 11M types struggling over the vsp decision. I'm a McChord C-17 guy (what's up beernuts) with my papers in, got disapproved on the first try, waiting to hear about the 55 additional slots they released for the 99 year group. I haven't heard any more rumors about the program than what people have already posted, but I'll definitely share any info if I get it.
Ske-17, are you at LTS or CHS? 8 of 8 is pretty sweet.
