What a crock of (#$*!! I am a ground officer and always had a call sign from my ensign days on at all of my VF and VFA squadrons. Sometimes they were cool and sometimes you ended up with one you didn't care for. If you showed that it bothered you then it would only get worse. One good liberty incident was always a sure way to get your call sign changed.

I think the best time ever was when Admiral Mullen was our BG Commander. We named him "shoe" and he HATED IT! Every time we had focsle (SP sorry I am not a shoe) follies we would all chant it as he walked up. He went to the CO's and it didn't stop, he went to CAG and it didn't stop, he went to the CO of the boat and it didn't stop. Finally he stopped coming. Each time he would complain, we would get a good "talking to" and then be right back at it. OH how I miss the old navy.

Don't worry, we did the same thing to one of the CSG Commanders we had that was a shoe. Same act, same result, he never stopped coming to follies though, and he always showed up at rats to hang with the guys in bags. I may have actually seen him on the PS2 that was hooked up one night too.

LT Lowe was naturally "Hung".
LT Sutter was had an L added after the S and then the name was truncated to four letters.
I flew LT Sax's grimy gray jet right after a 6 mos, cruise to Edwards for their airshow. He was named 'Scrotum" and thats what was painted on the jet. The British photog enthusiasts took alot of snaps.
The one guy on the cat who left the brakes on during the stroke became 'Boom Boom"
In the halls of Naval Aviation anyway, if they don't make fun of you, then they don't like you. Nothing worse than being called "Sir' by everyone on the boat. That callsign was left only for the wretched <g>
Well put. If the guy had went with it....and just laughed it off or threw it back at the guys with good attitude, his would have changed. Navy Times? Unbelievable.
Warrior Monks...they are trying to turn us into warrior monks.

I have a lot of ex Navy and Marine buds here at work. I was hanging out with a whole slew of them one day when we realized I was the only one that didn't have a callsign. Almost immediately "Girth" was born. USMCFLYR has met me so I'm sure he can see the humor. I proudly embrace my new name to those guys!

BDGERJMN,
No argument with anything you said.
I don't like it any more than you! No, they shouldn't lose their careers. It shouldn't even be an issue.
But IT IS. And whether or not I like it doesn't matter. It's "reality".
Yep, Kadena and other places can get rolling. And my buds have done the same thing in the past... stuff that, had they been caught would have gotten a lot of bad press. Folks would have been fired.
But they kept it in "the circle of trust".

Hence my arguement for keeping club traditions, in the club (by club I mean ready room).

This whole issue is laughable. It reeks of the further pussification of our mlitary. The squadron pilots should just blanket party the young lad and teach him not to go outside the squadron unless it pertains to safety or hazard. Where does it end?
Semper fi,
Aloha

So, now the AirWarriors forum is in on the act.

Apparently our intrepid Ensign saw a post over there from a retiree, felt 'threatened' by it, and now NCIS is looking into the post.

If you don't like your assigned or earned call sign GTFO.

If your skin isn't thick enough to take a call sign you don't like I don't want my a$$ counting on you when we are down range. The people shooting at you don't care about your feelings.

If your going to tell a story, tell it correctly:

1. A friend of his found the post and alerted him.

2. Details of the post:

On early Saturday morning, a man identifying himself online as Flugelman posted a photo on the AirWarriors.com of a naked man tied to a tree titled “Tree of Woe.” The caption above the photo read, “Send the Fagmiester back to the Goatlocker. We'll take care of him/her/it..."

3. Details about the poster:

The photo was posted by someone with the username Flugleman. According to his profile, he is 67, ATCS [Senior Chief Air Traffic Controlman] USN (Ret.) ’82, Aircrew VP’s and VR’s. He lists his current location as “Back in the MEtroMess…”; says he’s a retired software engineer who enjoys “travel, shooting, computers, golf, golf and golf.”
His favorite quote is: “Don’t pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he’ll just kill you.”
His signature is, “We don’t hang men for stealing horses, we hang them that horses may not be stolen.”

A little too much free speech.....
