Three hour drive is tolerable. Some would rather commute that distance. It comes down to the individual's pain level.
AA short call is still 'reasonable available'. Company likes to define the time. It isn't.
"A pilot on Short Call Duty is expected to be contactable for assignment to a sequence that commences during the current RAP and be “reasonably available by surface transportation” to the airport."
Rule #1 on probation - don't be stupid.

Hello again,
Couple more questions regarding using my foreign military hours to work in the USA.
Assuming worst case that I have to meet normal ATP 1500hr mins (rather than 750hr for US military). Can any of that 1500hrs be done in the sim? I've already got over 100hrs in a full motion Cat D sim here in the USA.
I've had some contact from a regional saying they would accept an application from me using a FAA Verified EASA CPL ME/IR and 1st class medical, and they would pay for the CTP-ATP course. Should I be taking advantage of this and do a couple of years in the regionals? Or should I be paying for this course myself and trying to apply to Majors? I reckon I will only have about 1500hrs total but 700-800 of it on heavy 4-eng turbine (as a co-pilot).
Thoughts/opinions welcome. Might put this on a Civvy thread too.
Regards
IIAB

2. Even if you were coming from the U.S. military, no major is going to hire you with less than 1500 hours total time, let alone 1500 turbine. Best bet is to go the regional route right away and let them pay for your ATP.
3. No idea if the sim time counts toward the ATP. Maybe go ask the FAA.
Good luck. You probably wouldn't need to spend too long at the regionals. But that's your best bet. If you got hired by a major with your hours now, that would meet the true definition of a pilot shortage and we're not quite there yet.
Choose your regional wisely. It can make all the difference.

Hoping for a little advice from bros who have gone before...
Stats:
- Current/Qualified USAF fighter IP
- Q1s all past checkrides, no training issues, no civilian checkride failures
- End of initial UPT ADSC (currently 11.5 yrs AD time)
- 2 months from receipt of next assignment (aka I'm on the VML, have submitted my assignment prefs, and will get an assignment in or around March 2016)
- 2500TT, 2200 TPIC (~1100 ME TPIC, ~1100 SE TPIC...former T6 IP)
- 4yr undergrad (non-USAFA) in Mechanical Engineering
- 7yr Masters' in Applied Mathematics (from a reputable school)
- Safety school, squadron chief of safety
- NOT an Evaluator or WIC grad
- 1 internal rec at Delta/United/SW, 0 at all others
- Apps submitted ~1 week ago
Question: Which of the following options makes the most sense for an individual who wants to get hired by a Legacy:
a) Take one more 3-yr assignment to pad my hours/quals (i.e. try to pick up a SEFE qual and go over 3000TT)
b) 7-day opt and leave ASAP for the regionals, while keeping my apps in and updating regularly
c) Declare my intent to separate, but ride out my full 6-months of post-7-day-option time...hoping to get the call
d) Go guard/reserve while keeping the apps on file
Follow-up: Anything else I can do to enhance my resume? (Currently on a flying deployment).
Thanks for reading,
Sled

Sled,
You shouldn't need to go to the Regionals with those hours.
Update your apps, and stay on active duty.
When you get the orders, 7-day opt, and use the 6 months to get your airline job.
If you want to be in the Guard, remember that if you pick a unit now, it may be a long way from your airline domicile.
Volunteer to stay on your flying deployment if you can.
