Give it a try and find out. And ask them about the Essential Job Functions for a pilot. It's 8 pages long.

Your sanity and career will be better off if you get hired at a regional, ULCC, or major carrier. Good Luck...

It's a job that works for some , not for others , but if you have airline aspirations, regional flow , or a ULCC , are better paths
to that destination, the bitterness, well , no one is forced to be here , fortunately we are in the best hiring boom in a generation. Cheers out !!!

Here is my honest observation.

I am getting ready to start my 14 th year in an APU airplane as a PIC and I live in a Class B city.

The biggest benefit to working at Netjets is our basing. If you live anywhere other than a big city, this is obviously huge.

Second is our healthcare. Our healthcare would cost around 5-600/mo at AA.

Third is the varity of flying you'll do and the people you fly with. Even this week I was flying to airports I still have never been to. Not running around airline terminals, but instead having a cup of coffee while talking to a nice local retired guy while he hangs a new motor on his 1946 tail wheel is something I enjoy. I have also never met two pilots with the same background. It seems like NJA has hired from all over the place. This makes cruise way more interesting to hear about everyone's previous flying life.

Another appreciated reality with flying the line here is that there is almost no authority gradient. When at work you just work with your partner to get the job done. Who ever happens to be standing where ever when something needs done and it gets done. So working together with out drama is nice.

We also have a good safety culture. We have never lost a pax (knock on wood, and have a good fatigue procedure, and a no fault go around policy). Last week I had to get meteorology and dispatch on the phone for a re route that was going to change the company' schedule for us. No push back what so ever.

Another is airmanship. Because we go to new places all the time, most pilots here are really good with stuff not normal at 121. Non-precision, circles, mountains, islands, non-radar, etc..

The offset of all of this is money, duties at work, and retirement.

If I was looking at coming to NJA as a new hire understand that you will have an average 12hr duty day and average 12 hours off. You will receive many many sched changes throughout the day. You are also responsible for expense reports after the jet is flown, unloaded, cleaned, and restocked. Management has said no growth. Therefore I don't see a new hire upgrading for 15 years.

If you live in a small community, and have a large family that would be expensive to insure, and shutter at sitting around terminals, than NJA may be for you.

I'm guessing your first question is rhetorical, and I don't want to offend those 10 guys so I'll keep my mouth shut.

I'm content at NJA (12 year PIC). I have a lot to be thankful for, I upgraded quickly while a lot of my friends were furloughed for years or at best had a cruddy QOL at a cruddy airline. 2006-2008 were good years here, if you didn't get furloughed during that time we were all paid a decent wage to not fly much while the airlines were taking it up the rear.

However, times have changed. Nothing stays the same.

Basing is great. Healthcare is great. We are working harder than ever, our contract leaves a lot to be desired. Many pilots I know are exhausted at the end of a tour, even after a fatigue call a few days prior. The work level is not sustainable from a safety aspect (pilots were complaining directly to management at a recurrent class last month) and if it continues I hope our pilots can stay safe out there.

I don't expect much to change in the future. The union seems more concerned about their appearance and power, they are either incapable or unwilling to help out the pilot group where it matters. Perhaps that is the fault of our pilot group, I don't know...they certainly keep electing people that are, ummm, well, "status quo" imperfect.

Sitting on the back of an airliner or walking through a terminal is still the worst part of my job. The airlines I fell in love with in the 1980s and 1990s no longer exist, the industry has changed forever and the dream job(s) I came into the business for decades ago no longer exist anywhere.

NetJets is a stable company, the management is relatively good (considering the industry). It is by far the most successful and highest paying fractional, but there is a lot to be desired these days.

NetJets is both good and bad. Just like people, there are two sides to the coin.

As a 12 year Captain I have no desire to leave to an airline unless I'm forced through downgrade, furlough, economic collapse, etc. While people cheer the airlines on this thread many of my friends have the same grievances and are no happier than I am. They may retire with a bit more in the bank, but at my phase of my life that isn't significant enough to justify the uprooting of my family a job change will cause.

Some more senior pilots here absolutely love it and some junior pilots really hate it. Many have left. Everyone has a different (and valid) experience.

I do enjoy flying the Phenom and going to all the fun little airports. A good overnight in Lake Placid or Aspen is something a major airline pilot will never do, and I appreciate those parts of my job that are better than the airlines, even though unfortunately they are more and more seldom as time goes on.

If you are the type that is defined by your job and your status, this obviously isn't the place for you. It likely never will be. Why people can't move on from that fact, I dunno...like a previous poster said....it works for some. I'm content.

So I guess to summarize, if you're a captain life is good. If you're an F.O. you have a 10 to 15 year wait for life to be good?

Without an age cap, it's at least double that.

What did you expect? NJA is good for people hired 14 years ago and upgraded quickly. That's not you. No one goes to flight school so they can sit right seat in a business jet for 15 years, playing copilot/babysitter to some septogenarian who's there just to get out of the house and will probably die the day after their retirement is forced on them by FDAC. Is there more flying satisfaction at NJA than the airlines, yes, but there is far, far less professional satisfaction. Gamble with your career appropriately.
