121 life has never appealed to me--that's why I chose the fractionals. But to each his own. I once ran into a nine-year United FO who said he was earning $80k/year and didn't know when he was going to upgrade. You can almost make that much as a new-hire for NJs on the 18-day schedule.

It always amuses me when people judge the quality of a job based on the amount of money earned at it.
Every starry-eyed nubie pilot thinks they'll end their career flying an international widebody making $300K and working 10 days a month. That's just the tip of the iceberg, the very small minority, gents.
A whole lot more will end up on a narrowbody, if not in the left seat of a regional jet making a WHOLE heckuva lot less flying to the same 20 or 30 airports.
Some guys may prefer a few less bucks and a whole lot more diverse flying and go the corporate/fractional route.
Different strokes for different folks.

The problem I have is all the other BS that comes along with the job. When I say I work way harder than my 121 friends I mean to say they aren't loading bags, sweeping the carpet, wiping down tables, arranging the catering, restocking sodas and snacks, or pushing a deuce down the lav because its caught in the flapper.
Oh yeah and when I've completed my fourth leg of the day scheduling is gonna keep me at the airport till the 12 hour mark, just because they can...it doesn't matter its only gonna turn into 10 hour overnight, because its legal.

When I worked at a small 135 turbo prop operation not too long ago, we had a few newer pilots who would bash 121.. for no other reason than what they read on FI.com or from some disgruntled regional pilot...
All types of flying offer the employee some qualities they enjoy.
I have done a wide variety of flying to support my family (not just when I was 21 and single) ( small regional, large regional, 135jet, fractional, 91jet, 135turbo prop, Legacy 121 widebody international) For me I know what each offers interms of QOL.

What I am trying to point out is not to criticize until you've walked a mile in someone else's shoes.
You appear to have put in the miles.

News on the street is that there is a meeting this Wednesday between the Union and Mgmt. regarding recalls.
Waiting to hear what the hiring plans are for 2014 and the furlough deferral process. Being one of the 495 I am watching with interest to say the least.

Wow. I didn't know the contracts had changed so much. I haven't been keeping up with things as much since the furlough. So are the legacies trending towards better pay and QOL now like way back in the day? Maybe I have a simplistic view, but the reasons I never was interested in 121 was I felt I would be stuck in the same routes for a long time, have to commute, eat air terminal fast food, and not have a lot of international opportunities (at least earlier on). I don't necessarily care about having a huge paycheck (although I definitely want a contract that pays well); I care more about time off with the family. That's why I bid for the 7 on/7 off schedule as soon as I can after training.
