You are reading that right. If you put in 8% they match half of that. Maybe stick with the lowly regional then??

Definitely not lower than the regionals. They match 50% of whatever you put in, up to 8%. So if 8% of your gross salary is $1000 they put in $500 for you. And this starts Year 1. Curious what regional has that on Year 1?

It’s essentially a 4% match (50% of 8) that never increases.

Regardless of starting day 1, It’s the lack of year over year increase that causes us to fall behind almost every regional.

SkyWest, Horizon, ExpressJet and many more have a 401k match that reflects and then exceeds ours after just one year or less of service.

So while it’s not low, it is towards the below average end compared to a lot of the regional airlines.

Are the regionals who we want to be competing with anyway?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about getting 16% contribution with $0 out of pocket like at the majors. All I’m saying is that ours is not on the low end whatsoever compared to all companies out there except the majors. Most regionals, including Skywest, Envoy and PSA are the same if not lower than JSX’s 50% of 8%. It would require for you to be on property over 5-8 years in average compares to others to get above what we get starting Day 1. The only exception is Endeavor which matches 100% up to 12.5%.

You’re totally right. With the larger pay factored in too the difference is nil. I definitely wouldn’t let that be a deciding factor by any means.

Also, the Captains here are responsible for the flight planning, fuel load + weight and balance for each flight. We don’t use dispatchers for that. All is done through the EFB and it is taught to you extensively on IOE.

If you are coming from the 121 world, are sharp, have a good attitude and do well at CAE + IOE - you can expect to upgrade in 30 days from you finishing right seat IOE. Some have done it even sooner. Point is, and they’ll say this to you at indoc, your ability to upgrade will depend on you and your skills vs time.

We are fat on Captains right now but that will only last for a few months. Explosive growth coming in 2020. Better to be temporarily fat on PIC’s than FOs.
Are they still looking for low time guys? I remember they were hiring folks with wet commercials for a while.

I think this changed about a year ago, It might come back next year but as of now, they are looking for people with at least 1500. An internal recommendation does seem to help. Keep trying and best of luck on your search.

Thanks! I'm currently saving up money for CFI after spending everything on IR & commercial AMEL. Unfortunately I don't know anyone there or have any internal recs. I guess I will just have to keep updating my resume and just pray for a response back lol.

Just a heads up, the lowest-time candidates I saw in my interview group were CFIs who either already exceeded or were nearly at ATP mins.

The bulk of candidates seemed to be either regional pilots, 91/135 turbine pilots, or recently retired 121. Best of luck to you, but I wouldn’t count on JSX if you’ve just got a wet commercial/IR.

It’s an exciting place and folks seem really happy, so you might just want to grind out those hours as a CFI and then make your application!
