I've been out of the loop. We still hiring about 12/month?

undflyboy06 04-15-2010 01:02 PM

How's lovely Grand Island, Nebraska? Seen any hot cornhusker girls yet :)?

cflight 04-16-2010 07:22 AM

Thought i would try to search some of my questions but it seemed not to work. Finally received a response to interview. Of the two bases being hired into. Does OAK upgrade faster. I believe I have read this somewhere. But the housing i'm guessing is higher. This leads me to my second question where are most of the pilots living in OAK. Of the two if i wanted to stay somewhere for awhile which would be the best location if given the choice.

mwf008 04-16-2010 08:11 AM

When I was based in OAK I lived in Alameda and loved it. If you get some roommates and look thoroughly, you can find an apartment in the $600 range (per person). There are cheaper places to live in the area, but Alameda has a great small town feel with lots of bars and restaurants within walking distance, and is about a 10 minute drive to work. To answer your other question, unless a lot of pilots leave over a short span of time, don't count on upgrading in OAK for at least a year.

cflight 04-16-2010 12:52 PM

thanks for the info. i really want to settle in for awhile somewhere and get some quality experience. So the wait to upgrade would be ok for me. But we all want to upgrade so i was wondering which one is faster. do you still work for amf

That changes from month to month I'm sure. Just take what you're given and make do bc you don't necessarily get to choose, just give your preference.

cflight 04-16-2010 02:35 PM

appreciate the info

ZBowFlyz 04-21-2010 09:43 PM

Its a Frasca Sim. Study VFR/IFR charts, approach plates and scenario questions regarding approaches, weather and alternates. Know the systems of the aircraft you have recent or most time in and be yourself. "Say your prayers and take your vitamins" and you should be ok. GL

IlliniPilot99 04-28-2010 06:50 PM

I heard they sent a class of 13 home and are going to furlough????!!!

that sucks!

(sorry if this is posted earlier I didn't read to far back)

WalkOfShame 04-28-2010 08:42 PM

My friend got the call today. Class canceled. Anyone know why? I thought they were going to be hiring through the next several months?

undflyboy06 04-28-2010 09:03 PM

Probably due to the fact that not as many are bailing to go back to the airlines. I think they planned heavily on a lot of pilots being recalled, or just leaving to go to the airlines, but the airlines have been recalling slower then what they anticipated.

I really hope they don't furlough. This company has a pretty good history when it comes to not furloughing. I would be shocked if management slipped this badly, and have to furlough due to over hiring.

cflight 04-29-2010 06:18 AM

yep its all true my interview canceled. will continue mid summer. i think there where actually 13 pilots. anyways.

F2GSuper 04-29-2010 07:52 AM

Well That Is Just Awesome!

13 people in the May 02 class, and 11 actual line pilots got furloughed! This is the numbers I've heard.

Where did the 11 get furloughed from?

Where did u hear that 11 line pilots are being furloughed? We have some of the most junior people at our base and as far as I know (being this morning), none of them have been furloughed.

cflight 04-29-2010 10:24 AM

not exactly what i heard. the ones that are furloughed; some just passed their check ride the others class was canceled.

find a way 04-29-2010 11:10 AM

No one has been furloughed yet. The schedule was taken down for the next two weeks so it doesnt look very positive for us low totem polers. Hopefully the rumors were misunderstood and the 11 that were furloughed were only yhe people that were in the process of training. Please update if anyone hears anything.

jeepthrills 04-29-2010 12:28 PM

<----was supposed to be in the May class...which got moved to June...now cancelled indefinately.:(

mwf008 04-30-2010 03:51 AM

I'm not believing this until I hear it from the company. Maybe it's because I'm way out here in cvg, but none of us has heard any of these rumors. Can one of you provide a credible source as to where the number eleven has come from? As for the classes getting cancelled/rescheduled, from what I understand that was standard practice not too long ago and not cause for concern. I would hate to be wrong about this...

F2GSuper 04-30-2010 01:40 PM

I heard from someone in the training department. 13 laid-off from the March and April classes. Some had passed their checkrides, some had not.

Can anyone from any of our bases substantiate this magical 13 number?

undflyboy06 04-30-2010 03:29 PM

Just got confirmation that 3 pilots from PDX were let go today. :(

Scooter2525 04-30-2010 10:21 PM

2 from OAK, 3 from PDX.

Yeah I see no reason for my friend who was supposed to be in the June class to lie and start looking for a new place to hang his hat.

That sucks for the guys that probably just got finished moving to a new city. At least now I understand why I haven't been called about the interview I had last week. SOL.

Yeah, AMF had a small furlough and a few other layoffs. Tough for those involved, but . . . I believe it's the second furlough in the company's 41-year history, and it probably won't last very long. The reason is a simple need to balance currently available crews with the current and and short-term projected level of flying activity.

A couple of Basic Indoc classes were also canceled or delayed, but again -- this is a temporary setback, and the hiring process will likely start grinding along again in a couple of months.

So, anyone know anything about company movement? I know it hasnt been long since the furloughs, but are we moving in the right direction yet? Help us out Oldog. Thanks

Almost all of our international routes have been upgraded to bigger aircraft (ie Mexico) that's going to help a little bit.

jumpedin 05-13-2010 05:39 AM

Hey freightdog, did you go to SCSU? I seem to remember you from a different forum. I don't think I have enough posts to PM on here yet.

I attended Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, CA and earned my Bachelors from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Nevermind then. There was someone with almost the same avatar and very close to the same name on a SCSU forum (But now I see that he works/worked at Key Lime)

I'll stop the thread hijack now.

By chance does Ameriflight ever put people in the right seat if they were very close to but not quite at 135 mins? I'm thinking not now of course, but when the economy starts running again.

If you are close, a lot of times they will give you an SIC checkride and stick you with a training captain or line captain to build up the rest of your time

As indicated in another post, some routes are being upgraded to larger aircraft due to increased cargo volume, and the company is vigorously pursuing new business. So we're moving in the right direction. It's unpleasant for those that got delayed or furloughed, but the pendulum is starting to swing the other way.
